It’s like magical-realism. Real world but touched by magic. Children Who Chase Lost Voices is the most adventure/fantasy of his works, reminiscent of Miyazaki (and it absolutely rules). That said, all his movies kind of place emotion and atmosphere over plot.
He only has one film that isn’t centered around romance and it’s also his most fantasy film (Children Who Chase Lost Voices). Highly recommend. Shinkai’s works are great mostly due to the animation and the music, not so much the story. He enjoys pulling on the heart strings a lot, so if you’re into that you’ll enjoy the stories.
Almost done watching Mob Psycho 100. I have six more episodes of the second season, plus the OVA. Really enjoying how when you take away all the spiritual shenanigans, the story really just boils down to the social development of this awkward teen as he becomes more confident in himself and develops his own identity. Got done with the episodes where Reigen and Mob had a fight, and I love the layered realizations that Reigen has on his little journey. First noticing how empty his life had been without Mob, and then his shock seeing Mob happy with his friends, showing how little he'd actually been paying attention to Mob's life outside of work. Finally, ultimately having the epiphany that the way he's been treating Mob is borne out of his own loneliness and selfishness, and that he's holding Mob back from becoming a better person. The way Mob anonymously comes to his rescue and reassures Reigen that he's still a good person gave me all the feels, and shows how much Mob has grown, that the child is now comforting the adult. Anyway, when I'm done with this, I think I'll watch A Lull In The Sea next.
So been meaning to ask this thread for a while. What’s everyone’s favourite OP? Mine is either A Cruel Angels Thesis from Evangelion or Lay Your Hands On Me from Kiznaiver
I have a lot I really like, but ones that have really wormed into my brain are: Redo and Realize from Re:Zero 99 and 99.9 from Mob A Girl Who Chants Love At The Bound Of This World from Yu-No Kyouran Hey Kids!! and Goya no Machiawase from Noragami Kimi no Sei from Rascal Does Not Dream Of Bunny Girl Senpai Steppin' Out from Durarara!! Kawaki wo Ameku from Domestic Girlfriend Most openers from Food Wars Every opener from Date A Live Rising Hope from The Irregular At Magic High School Dark Crow and Mukanjyo from Vinland Saga Taiga you Tomo ni Naite Kure from Zombie Land Saga Any song by Myth & Roid Clattanoia and Go Cry Go from Overlord Hello To Dream from DanMachi Black & White from Problem Children Touch Off from The Promised Neverland My Hero from Inuyashiki Flyers from Death Parade Question and Bye Bye Yesterday from Assassination Classroom Almost anything from Gintama Shadow Is The Light from A Certain Scientific Accelerator Kono Yubi Tomare from Kakegurui I think that's where I'll end this list, I'm probably leaving stuff out but that's more than enough.
Oh wait, the full versions of the openers from The World God Only Knows are ridiculously epic. EDIT: And Seven Doors from Trinity Seven. Okay, I promise that's the last one.
battlecry (samurai champloo), uragiri no yuuyake (durarara!), and asterisk (bleach) are my favorites and have been for a long time.
Probably a super cliche list but for good reason imo NGE intro YuYuHakusho - “Smile Bomb” Cowboy Bebop intro Samurai Champloo intro Naruto - “Far Away” (intro during the Chunin exams arc) Death Note season 2 intro Tokyo Ghoul intro 1 and 2 Fire Force intro 1 All of the AoT intros Vinland Saga intro 1 Every Demon Slayer intro, but particularly the Entertainment District arc Both One Punch Man intros I love a lot of the songs that are in both HxH and MHA but really hate all of their intros tbh
I Swear from III especially is such an earworm of a song to me. Plus I love how sweet ARMS manages to find a way to incorporate the words "Date A Live" in the lyrics of every opener. I haven't heard the new one yet, so I don't know if the trend continues.
off the top of my head… The AoT openings The first Vinland Saga opening Cowboy Bebop obviously To Your Eternity
The amount of terrible shows that have great openings and great shows that have terrible openings is quite alarming. Flip Flappers has a banger of an opening, not a terrible show, but just sort of a meh show. ACCA 13 started off so strong and completely fizzled out in the end after all that build up. Fantastic opening though. If you like the idea of Persona 3 and Persona Q music mashed up that's kind of what it sounds like. The Perfect Insider was an absolute mess of a show, but it has a pretty great opening. This may be a deep cut, but The World God Only Knows has two sick openings. The way the intro to the 3rd season completely turns on it's head is awesome.
I have about 30 others I could list, especially stuff like this: Such a fucking bouncy bop. Some more classic JRock opening from a trash show
Sorry, I haven't gone back and read the posts so I didn't see you talked about The World God Only Knows which is one of the only good Harem type shows because the main character thinks of others and isn't a piece of shit. I need to go through all those posts and see what music rocks me. I could have a whole thread of just openings if I'm being honest.
I never watch endings and I almost always skip all openings nowadays because I don't like being spoiled stuff because I'm weird, but this ending, which is very popular I know, still is one of the best endings ever. The animation and the music are perfect together. It's so cute.
Interesting. I don't know which ones you've watched, but I also have watched quite a few entries in that genre and I don't know if there's any leads I've seen that I'd really call a piece of shit exactly. Date A Live for example is basically a harem, albeit mixed with other genres, and Shido is one of my favorite anime protagonists, in part because he is a considerate positive person. I've watched other stuff I'd consider part of that genre like Noucome, Nisekoi, Oreshura, Oresuki, Yamada-kun And The Seven Witches, Love Tyrant, and Yunna And The Haunted Hot Springs and I never really got any bad or even unlikeable vibes from the protagonists. That said, I also don't put a lot of thought into it either. Most of these shows I watch for dumb fun and anything else they get out of me is a bonus, really. And I know anime like you're speaking of does exist; School Days, for example, which I have not watched, but I know of its existence.
School Days isn't even really a harem show. It's just a categorically terrible piece of garbage. I've seen almost all of those actually haha, but I've also seen a lot where the guy is just a perverted idiot and the whole show is just junk. I'll try to find some and list them, but I try to forget about them as soon as I can. If you just want a horrible incest show you should watch A Sister's All You Need. I mean, don't watch it. It's fucking disgusting. I swear on my life that the opening few minutes of the first episode is some of the craziest shit I've ever seen in my life. I had to turn it off and question why I even have Crunchyroll at that point.
I've heard of that show. I am aware of its existence. The trashiest one I've ever watched is The Testament Of Sister New Devil. It's a categorically worse version of High School DxD, in every possible way.
Best op's Tank! (sorry, I'm a super casul) Evangelion (again SORRY) Mob Psycho 100 1 Bleach op1 (for the nostalgia) Code Geass 1 Demon Slayer 1 FMA Brotherhood 2 Soul Eater 1 Vision of Escaflowne Guilty Crown (absolutely terrible show; fantastic op)
