Now that Funimation and Crunchyroll are joined, I’ll once again suggest people check out Sonny Boy (previously only on Funimation). Only 12 episodes, unique art style, incredible soundtrack, beautiful/devastating/trippy story. It’s incredible
It’s not showing up on the Crunchyroll app when I search for it. Maybe all the content is still being transferred.
Just finished Made in Abyss. The last few episodes had some moments that were hard to watch…it was a very emotional show. I’m glad we’re finally getting a season two later this year.
So I finished Gleipnir, and what a weird fucking show. Body horror in abundance and a cast of very broken people. Very dark in places. One of the creepiest bits preying on my mind right now is in the last episode, where the show does a sharp deconstruction of the trope of parents never being around. Early on in the show, we're told that Shuichi, the protagonist, has parents that are basically workaholics that leave before he gets up and come home after he's gone to bed. Midway through the show, we learn that Shuichi's memories have been seriously messed with, but we don't know what was changed/removed from his mind or to what degree. In the last episode, Clair comes over to Shuichi's house, and we learn the true terrifying extent of this mental damage. Clair sees that his house is covered with dust, with food openly rotting on the table, and only a clean path where Shuichi walks from the front door to his room. Shuichi doesn't notice any of this, and previously when we've seen things from his POV, we haven't seen anything out of place, implying that he's literally not able to see the state his house is in. Eventually, Clair asks Shuichi when the last time was that he saw his parents, and the act of thinking about this question causes some of his mental block to wear away. This is when we realize the reason Shuichi's parents haven't been around isn't because they're at work, but because they're literally gone, made to vanish sometime before the events of the show, with the implication that they actually might be dead. The thought that all this time Shuichi's just been going about his life not knowing or seeing that his parents are just fucking gone is heartbreaking to me, especially since a big recurring issue in the show is the idea that the cast's loved ones could be endangered by what they're going through. It's just a big fucking block of WHAM. Anyway, unfortunately the show ended on a cliffhanger and I don't think a Season 2 is happening. I might chase down the manga at some point to learn what happens next, but for now I'm moving on to the next anime. Next time: Vikings!
I started Ranking of Kings last night. I’m on episode 7 and love it so far. I guess there will be 23 episodes and episode 22 is coming soon. A deaf prince is rejected from being king when his father dies and is exiled by his younger brother. He goes on a journey with a creature companion he meets. Awesome characters and interesting animation for an anime.
Finally started Attack on Titan part 2, and maybe I’m only really noticing because I watched a fuck ton of really pretty anime the last year, but holy shit are these character designs ugly.
I finished Vinland Saga. Really enjoyed it and I look forward to Season 2. I find the whole exploration of the Viking era fascinating. I actually used to watch the show Vikings and kind of fell off somewhere in the fifth season, but not because of anything the show did. It's interesting to me seeing these characters in a world where values and morals are completely different to what we know now, and seeing them reflected not as good or bad people, but ultimately just people, who sometimes make selfish, petty, and monstrous choices, and sometimes make choices that serve a greater purpose, that are even respectable and honorable. I especially enjoyed seeing the relationship between Thorfinn and Askeladd play out, as it's clear by the end of the season that they'd become more than just frenemies. That scene with Thorfinn being dragged away from Askeladd's dead body, and he drops his knife and reaches out his hand instead? Powerful stuff. You really get the sense that he just lost a second father. Anyway, next time: Reverse isekai! Gate!
I don't know that you need any in particular. I think they explain the historical background for what's going on fairly well within the course of the anime, and they don't really delve super deep into Viking cultural lore. I don't think anyone would be lost watching it.
Would really recommend reading the manga. The first season is basically one long prologue to the "real" story, which delves way more into those themes via Thorfinn trying to find a new sense of identify after defining himself by his relationship to Askelaad for his entire life
Appreciate the recommendation, but I'll just wait for the second season to come out. I've got a lot of anime on my list to scratch off.
So this is happening. Adult Swim to Produce 2 New FLCL Seasons, Housing Complex C Anime I've never fully watched a season of FLCL, but I like how they continue the trend of Progressive and Alternative with *checks notes* Grunge and Shoegaze.
Original FLCL is an absolute classic, highly suggest checking it out. Heard the other seasons were pretty meh, and I do not like the art style in that teaser at all.
I watched the original about ten years ago. It was good, but I definitely need to rewatch it. I went in blind and was pretty confused for parts lol.
Original FLCL is good, but highly overrated. People claim it's the second coming of Christ, but they just like that it was nonsensical and had a banging soundtrack.
