It’s great, the most recent chapter is crazy. New releases can seem to drag just as much as the anime, though

It's such a good show and she might be one of the most accurate portrayals of a timid teenage girl I've ever seen. She's the fucking best.

  5. Dang, putting Hayao Miyazaki and Satoshi Kon in my top 50 films list got me thinking, I haven't caught up with anime films in a while. Like, what's Makoto Shinkai and Mamoru Hosoda been up to? Anyone else I should look out for?

I finished watching Index III last night, which means I've now completed the Certain anime series in total. I even read ahead in New Testament a little bit but it was kind of hard to follow who was speaking at any given time so I gave up.

    Some random thoughts:

Now knowing what I do about the series, it's almost a shame that Index and Railgun were treated separately, even though I understand why that is. It feels though that the two dovetail with each other and inform each other enough at times to where they could have been treated as one adaptation, and it would help make a lot of plot points more coherent. Oh well.

I also understand what people are talking about when they say that Index's adaptation was rushed. The Battle Royale arc especially was very hard to follow just because of how many groups were involved and how quickly the anime flew through the events. Other arcs were fine but that one in particular, I feel like it needed one or two more episodes just to space things out a bit.

I also wish there had been flashbacks or callbacks to previous episodes, especially during WWIII, when elements from all the way back in Deep Blood returned and I had to refresh my memory on what exactly was going on. I remembered about Sasha and Angel Fall but I forgot all about the whole "entity inside Touma's arm" thing, and that took me by surprise.

That said, I also have quite a few things I enjoyed. Accelerator's path from card-carrying villain to repentant antihero was interesting to see play out, and I'm very happy with the epiphany he has in III where he realizes that he doesn't have to struggle to be a hero or a villain; he just has to follow his own moral compass. It's a pretty satisfying character arc for him.

I also enjoyed the reconciliation of Hamazura and Mugino; how Hamazura looks at this "monster" who's tried to kill him three times now and realizes it's ultimately not her fault and that he doesn't want to fight anymore. Him throwing down his gun and giving her a hug was a really heartwarming moment.

Based on that, I actually feel like I'm enjoying their arcs way more than Touma, who in comparison to Accelerator and Hamazura seems almost bland. I realize he's got more going on under the surface than is readily apparent, but even still, I feel like Touma is put in very black and white kind of dilemmas and if I have to hear him threaten to shatter someone's illusions one more time...

Anyway, beyond that, Russian Misaka is the best Misaka.

I decided to follow up my Certain watch with the fluffy Crawling With Love. In an amusing bit of serendipity, Nyarko of the latter was telling a story about how as a kid she would jump into other kids playing pretend and beat them up, leading them to nickname her "Imagine Breaker". I laughed.

Three episodes into Stone Ocean, this is my favorite season of JoJo since the second season. So good.

I finished Crawling With Love, which was light and fluffy amusement. A shame they weren't able to make more OVAs due to one of the voice actresses passing away, but the series ended on a relatively satisfying note regardless.

One thing I enjoy about anime is that the proverbial "they" will make an anime out of pretty much anything. A romantic comedy with humanized versions of H.P. Lovecraft's cosmic horrors isn't something I would ever imagine, but someone else did, and here we are.

For my next watch I've chosen Princess Connect Re:Dive, an adaptation/companion piece to the mobile game. I figure this has probably been some time coming, since I play the game and Season 2 comes out next year. I'm already four episodes in to a 13 episode season, so I imagine I'll be done relatively quickly.

It's more enjoyable watching it since I already know the characters and basic plot, so every moment is like "Hey, I know that person!" and "Hey, I know what they're talking about!", which makes me smile. How crazy is that?

I haven't seen it yet, and it's a shame that Netflix tends to do this so often, but at the same time, I'm never sure who these projects are for. They have to know their built in audience is the most apathetic to adaptations like this. Just feels like a waste of everyone's time.

Considering what they did to vicious and Julia’s characters, there wasn’t really anywhere to go. I have a very hard time believing the show runner was even remotely a fan of the anime

Been watching Yu Yu Hakusho, which I hadn’t seen since random episodes on Toonami or whatever back in the 00s. Wild how much better it is than HxH. Lame how it doesn’t seem to get as much nostalgic love as even something like Bleach, let alone Naruto/DBZ. Yusuke’s angst is so much more tolerable/entertaining than most shonen protagonists

I understand why people say HxH is better, but I think this show is just tighter all around. Sure, the final season is a bit meh in comparison to the rest, but it ends really well and all the characters still seem much more grounded and enjoyable.

Yu Yu will remain one of my favorites. They apparently had some new OVAs recently I still haven't seen and they have a (ugh) live action Netflix show coming out in December 2023.

Started Baki after I saw some good reviews for the new series. Liking it so far. Always disliked the way the classic series was drawn, so I don't think I'll be going back to that lol.

As much as I'm enjoying this, I'll be damned if I can tell most of the characters apart. They are all just balloons that pop and bleed A LOT.

The follow-up film to ‘Your Name’ and ‘Weathering With You’ by writer and director Makoto Shinkai has just been announced.

Suzume no Tojimari (Suzume Locking Up The Doors) will be released in fall 2022 and is a post-apocalyptic film about a 17-year old girl who lives in Kyushu. Her life changes one day when a young traveler tells her he’s looking for a door. She follows the young man into the mountains, where there’s an old door surrounded by modern ruins. This begins her mysterious journey.

I’m hyped whenever a new Shinkai film is announced, tbh. The guy never misses.

With the poster looking like a flooded rooftop, I’m curious if the “post-apocalyptic” setting is a result of the massive flood in Weathering With You…..
