I know the games were likely heavily influenced by Evangelion, but this last movies has some crazy NieR vibes.
So after finishing 3.33 I went back and watched the end of 2.22 to try and understand some shit and nah, 3.33 is just random batshit. I don’t think it’s possible to watch that not be confused because seemingly a billion insanely major things happened off screen between the two movies. maybe the final movie will answer those questions, firing it up now.
I still have an hour left but I’m convinced half of this budget was spent on cocaine. This is the most absurd shit ever. It rules
That was truly a fucking wild one. I think the original series/EoE is undoubtably better, but I appreciate just how fucking over the top and batshit the Rebuilds got. my only real complaint is there is some truly hideous CG in this. Particularly during a part that should’ve been incredible
I have 0 interest in 1.11 & 2.22, but I’m tempted to watch 3.33 & 3.0+1.0. My only hang up is, the last couple episodes of the series and End of Evangelion are perfect, so I dunno if I wanna potentially soil those two flawless endings with Rebuild (if it doesn’t click with me). Love hearing that they get weird, though, which is where my temptation comes in.
You'll need to watch at least the last 25-30 minutes of 2.22, as that's where it REALLY departs from the original series. I can't really say much more without giving anything away, but if you're a fan of the series you'll want to watch the rebuilds.
I liked 3.0+1.0 as an ending more than End of Evangelion, but I can't really say which is the better film, it's been a while. The latter half of 3.0+1.0 feels a lot like parts of Kare Kano, another Hideaki Anno/Gainax project, one I feel is often overlooked.
I’m never interested in the live action adaptations, but this one has me curious. "My Hero Academia" Is Really Getting A Live Action Movie
I love that maybe the most cinematic animation of the entire movie was Asuka force feeding Shinji crackers.
Part of me thinks the cgi for the giant Rei head is intentionally janky to make it even more unsettling.
I agree that a lot of the “anti-universe” stuff is meant to be bad CG, but I still think it would be better and more effective classically animated. There’s honestly just way too much CG in it as it is. It blends decently for a lot of it, but it’s still often ugly. Like I think you could have had unit 01 and 13 fight on a film set and keep that as hand drawn animation and the point would’ve come across just the same, but it would look way better.
Anyways I thought 3 + 1 was great. Loved the first hour in the village and the ending wrapped things up nicely.
I was very happy with it overall. Just…really hate CG in anime. there’s also a 2 part documentary on prime about Anno/the making of the movie. It’s not the most in depth (I think it was made for TV and makes a point to not spoil anything) but it’s kind of interesting to see his process (or lack thereof)
