I’m glad at least someone is releasing original, fun, animated films this summer. We just took our kids to see Lilo & Stitch which was, you know, fine or whatever, but they were also half bored because they’ve already seen the animated movie and while there are some differences between the two it’s basically just the “Choose Your Own Adventure” version like most of the other live action remakes. This summer’s kind of a wash for movies I can take my kids to see. A Lilo & Stitch remake this month, a How to Train Your Dragon remake next month (and my kids have also already seen the animated film), we finally get an original with Elio in June (although I’ve heard so little about it that it kind of seems like it might end up being another one of those mid-tier Pixar films), another Smurfs movie my kids have absolutely no interest in come July, and then a Bad Guys sequel in August.

So…yeah, I’m glad this one exists and wish it was going to theaters because it looks charming and fun and the animation looks cool and it’s original and I feel like it would do well with…the severe lack of competition this summer.

This is why all these remakes are such a bummer. Now that Dreamworks is dabbling in it and How to Train Your Dragon will almost assuredly do well, I guess that means we’ll be having both studios churning out more ho hum live action remakes rather than original material and bleh.

im surprised a kpop animated film isn't in theaters, kpop and Korean culture is HUGE! but yah i was just talking with my friend last night how disney ran out of ideas a long time ago and every remake live action has gone downhill since 2016/17, all those films were highly rated and they were good, now they are all mid to bad and yah i feel for you and i dont even have kids haha i just love animated movies

My kids and I are currently watching Steven Universe on Hulu and we’re almost done with season one and aw man I knew there was something wonky going on with the episode order. I just googled it because it kept feeling off for some reason and geeeeez that’s confusing. Apparently it’s like that on all streaming services? I’m glad we’re at least almost to the point where the episode order won’t be an issue anymore, but wow that explains so much. We kept watching episodes where they’d mention something that left us feeling like “did we miss something?” and yeah, I guess we did! So frustrating.

I just finished the final season of big mouth. It was a nice sendoff for everybody. Obviously, within animation, a fan always wishes they could keep going, but they did a good job of wrapping up the series. Also, I’m glad a raunchy adult animated show went on for eight years.

They added the Minecraft movie to hbo max and I watched it tonight with my best friend and his kids , his 9 year was bored before it ended. It was an hour and 40 minutes, could’ve been 20 minutes shorter. It was just ok, I chuckled a few times. Jack black was essentially playing himself which was fun but it got old quick. Jason momoa played a good meathead character. The two female characters were both underutilized and forgettable , the script didn’t have much for them to do. I’m glad I didn’t waste money/time seeing it in theaters.

Just watched this tonight with my kids and, yep, as expected this ruled. Animation was gorgeous, songs were catchy as hell, and the story was emotionally engaging. SHOULD HAVE GONE TO THEATERS.

Finished Steven Universe with my kids (although we still have to watch the movie and then Steven Universe Future next). Oh my, I loved it. What a satisfying little world to live in for a while. My kids sat down this morning to go back and rewatch the very first episode again and wow, what an evolution. The characters are all so well rounded by the end that the final season was definitely my favorite. Felt like a real victory lap, which is interesting knowing Rebecca Sugar kinda sorta got cut short and had to wrap it all up quicker than expected. Very interested to see what the movie and Future has in store. Also cool to hear about the upcoming Lars of the Stars spinoff.

White Diamond’s design and VO performance was suitably terrifying. Closing the show with that quiet little song, “Change Your Mind” made me tear up. Beautiful stuff.
