I’m a super casual listener of this band. Where can one get a quick summary of the drama leading up to all this?
I bought gutter phenomenon because Norma Jean posted a bulletin on MySpace telling people to go get it when it came out. saw them with Underoath in 07, with unearth in 2009, The Chariot in 2011, headlining a SMALL venue in Nashville in the early 2010’s. Never disappointed. sad for all involved. Including us because they made this so public. They could have been the metalcore rolling stones
Fuck… this is heartbreaking. I’ve seen them play the LA area every year for the past 15 years. This is a huge for our scene. Sad to see it end this way.
Absolute punch to the gut. I was really hoping they were able to work things out, but it’s too bad it ended this way. Hell of a run for arguably the most consistent band out there. I hope things turn out ok for all of them.
Pretty gutted by this news after how great Radical is, but can't say I'm surprised. After that whole blow up in December, nothing seemed to be resolved and the way they cancelled their UK tour seemed kind of odd as well. It's a shame it's ending so publicly and in such ugly fashion too.
That’s what I thought when I read that letter. Not so much a “you’re fired” as “we want to discuss the legal terms of winding the band up / splitting”
Please tell us what happened! Honestly, I’m so confused and sad. I was sooo stoked to see them with UO and have just a full body religious fucking experience with both bands. First one since COVID. God damnit. And their last record too. Their best work yet. Agggghhhhh.
I second this question. Would like someone to just spill the shit and not all these middle school allusions lol
When I was invited to play bass in my first real band, I was told by the guitarist to listen to Every Time I Die to get a feel of the style of music the band wanted to play. And this was in 2005! I'm shocked at their longevity. Bands that make extreme music don't usually last this long
Everyone asking for details/more complete story…just google “ETID break up” and you’ll find multiple articles: Every Time I Die Have Broken Up
I’m not a massive ETID fan, but I always respected their music and dedication. As a complete casual bystander to everything that seems to be happening, it seems like Keith’s sobriety, um, ‘awakened’ something in him and he may or may not be the same person anymore. I’m not saying that’s a good or bad thing, but it seems he’s changed quite a bit. I’ve seen it happen in a different way personally, it sorta reminds me of some dudes from high school who did DMT, sold all their stuff, and started to be paranoid ‘nomads’.
I don't anticipate we'll ever get a full picture of the situation. For as much as we'll get everyone's truths, and I believe they'll think they're honest, it feels like a prime example of a time in which perspective is going to greatly influence perceived blame and responsibility in the breakdown of their relationships. I'll admit I'm a longtime listener but hadn't followed the band itself as closely as I do a lot of others, though based on some interviews I'd listened to in the lead-up to the release of Radical (admittedly with Keith), I like everyone else have been pretty shocked.
Really had hoped they had buried the hatchet in December since it sounded like things went ok at their holiday show and could regroup for the UO tour. One of the most fun, high energy bands I've ever seen. This really sucks. Hope they all continue to make music in some capacity....which makes me wonder if this will lead to more music from The Damned Things?
That first Damned Things record is by far my favorite thing Keith has ever been a part of. The melodies were so good. Other than that I've only loved New Junk and, now that I listen to it, the new album. I only liked a song here or there from the catalog. It's sad to see such an iconic band end like this though.
I'm sure they're waiting till next week not to take away from their new album. Honestly, Spiritbox could move to direct support at this point.
Biggest yikes of a break up. Truly bummed for everyone involved. Helluva record to end with tho 10/10
