Andrew McMahon has announced that Upside Down Flowers will be released on November 16th. Today he’s released a video for “Teenage Rockstars” and pre-orders are now up. A message from Andrew about the album, along with some new tour dates, can be found below.

When I close my eyes and think about these songs I see the faces of the people I wrote them for. Some are so real I can conjure our shared lives in waves of nostalgia and others are a fiction I’ve grown to love so dearly over time they might as well be old friends. I see Penelope, the runaway, on a midnight bicycle ride. I see my friends and former bandmates on stages the world over as we navigated the strangest coming of age. I see the gambler driving to Las Vegas with every last dollar he can muster trying to pay off a debt he never knew he had. I see my grandmother in the courtyard on Lido and again in a bed at my aunts house where I played her one last song before she passed. I see the back house and the blue ocean, and all the heroes in heaven. I see the piano from my teenage years and my fingers getting older on it’s keys. I see my wife like a statue of calm with my daughter at her side and I see my sister in the backseat of the family car as we pulled out of that driveway in Ohio. I wrote this fast and alone in a California winter. I entrusted the production to Butch Walker, a friend and fellow traveler. A man I met in a moment so bizarre and so far gone now, but one that shaped me for years to come. How grateful I am we ended up back in each others orbits.

I’ve sent this record to friends who have said it’s my best and to some who never replied. What that means in the long run, I have no idea. What I know is this came from someplace primal and practiced and true. Find what you love, be patient or be quick. There is a piece of me in this and I hope a piece of you, my friends. As I see it we are all upside down flowers. Beautiful and backwards, and if we’re lucky…just a little proud. Upside Down Flowers will be here on November 16th, pre-order your copy of the album now.

I’ve tried to write this song a few times. I’m glad I waited. I don’t think anyone is ever ready for their dreams to come true. I know I wasn’t. All I’ve ever wanted to be was a songwriter. When I finally got the chance, it happened so fast, I didn’t fully appreciate how lucky I was. Looking back on that moment now I’m so grateful to still be sitting behind this piano; to be able to reflect with joy and without judgment on what it meant to be a teenager in a band living out my dreams with my best friends at my side. I know now what I had and what I have. With each new day I get to practice my craft, I try to honor the innocence of that dream with my gratitude. I dedicate this song to every kid out there wondering if it’s okay to dream of being a rockstar. I say “fucking dream” – watch the video for “Teenage Rockstars.”

Have always and always will love Andrew. Regardless of my opinion of his various albums, he always seems to come from a genuine place that is a breath of fresh air.

Even when it's typed, I always read his writing in the same delivery as "and today was a day just like any other."

so good. The vibe with the new songs seems to be more in line with JM than the previous Wilderness stuff, which I'm very happy about.

Very caught off guard from this announcement. I didn't think we'd be getting new music from him for quite sometime. Agreed with the above statement that this sounds more JM than AM&TW. Curious to see how it plays out.

It sounds more like Jacks Mannequin then the poppier electric stuff. The sound of the drums and guitar were great to here.

Random thought: High Dive is one of my favorite songs from his entire calatog, regardless of the moniker.

Hello. After years of casual voyeurism on these boards I’ve finally taken the plunge and signed up so that I can speak with you lovely people on Chorus.

I’ll start by admitting that part of the reason for this is that I need some advice. I’ve loved everything Andrew has ever done... His various bands and incarnations have probably been the one biggest constant on my musical canvas. So much so in fact that my girlfriend and I have chosen one of his songs for our first dance (2020 fingers crossed). We’d love to get married to “High Dive”. That song means everything to us. It’s the song I play to her when she’s feeling down and whenever I lose sight of the important things it won’t be 20 seconds before I hear it blasted over the Sonos because she’s put it on and I’ve forgotten about whatever insignificant thing has pissed me off and all I can do is smile and think about how much I love her.

The only problem is that where I live in the UK Andrew never released the Canyons EP and the Canyons version of High Dive is not available on Apple Music or any other streaming service. I’ll be honest, I need the Canyons Version. I can’t dance to save my life so a slowed down version gives me half a chance of making it look graceful. Does anyone have any ideas about how I can get my mitts on it? I’d be eternally grateful and promise to pay you back with various witticisms on these boards going forward!

As for these 2 songs themselves and this upcoming album, I’m loving what I hear! As has been mentioned, seems to veer more towards his Jack’s Mannequin stuff but if I’m honest I’ve been a fan of all the Wilderness output too. He’s never strayed from those catchy hooks and wistful lyrics in any form and this has all that in bundles so far.

Thank you for any help you give and look forward to getting to know some of you guys a bit more :)

Thank you! Sadly the YouTube video is not available in my country (it was, which is how I ever heard it, but it got removed).

I have got over a year to figure this out, which is the only positive. At one point the website said it would be realised in the UK but it never was. I could import it on vinyl... But then I need to get it onto a device somehow.

Would love to hear about any interactions he had with the other members of soco to get all of this footage/permission to use it. Everything andrew is fantastic, but the nostalgia I felt in watching the video really got me aching for a soco reunion tour...

They’re not on bad terms or anything so I doubt it was weird. I’d imagine he probably had to get the rights to some of those videos from whoever owned them though

Man, that video pulled some strings. Can't believe how old we've gotten. Looks like I'll be freezing my ass off outside in January for Andrew!

It’s just been such an honor to watch every one of Andrew’s projects bring him success. Jack’s Mannequin was my very first concert and I’m so glad I still get to see Andrew play sold out shows a decade later. Very excited for this album and I love the video.

This reminds me of when Yellowcard announced they were releasing Southern Air in late 2012 when WYTTSY came out early 2011. They were so inspired to write SA that they didn't feel like waiting and it was some of their best received work in the second life of the band... I'm thinking this is one of those situations with AM - pretty sure he's even said that he didn't set out to necessarily write a new record, but it just happened.

As in reference to the sound shift, I think he's just loosening his reigns on the "no guitar" sentiment that he had when starting AMITW project. Self-Title album had no guitar, Zombies had a little/subtle guitar work (Fire Escape), and, from what has been shared from Upside Down Flowers, he is not simply using the guitar as a layer... on "Teenage Rockstar" it very prominent

God damn, this song is a monster. Video is killer too.

It's frankly amazing to have that footage survive nearly 20 damn years and countless technological leaps; let alone thinking to record it in the first place. Obviously cameras and recording is ubiquitous now, but I can't imagine it was commonplace in 2002 to have a video camera on you for the most mundane activities of your life.

He seems excited about this record and I totally agree with the above Southern Air statement. If this is his version of Southern Air, we're going to be lucky to hear it.
