TROS does the most reprehensible thing by undoing the emotions we all felt for decades. The original movies ending with Battle of Endor no longer have closure because the galaxy’s ultimate evil was actually not defeated. He “somehow” returned in the most pithy way. Heck, it even undoes things they were creating in the two movies leading up to it.
Having recently rewatched Obi. I think while it was definitely flawed there was some good stuff in there. The Obi/Vader fight was an all timer live action lightsaber battle, and it hit emotionally. The acting and some of the dialogue were bad, but I'd put it far and above Boba Fett. I don't even remember anything that happened in Boba Fett. I put The Acolyte so far in the same category as Obi Wan. There is some bad acting and corny dialogue, but the fights rule and there has been some really cool moments.
Boba Fett is by far the worst. Obi Wan was clunky 90% of the way and then the final battle was incredible. Rise is a sleight against God.
The first 4 episodes were meh. Some questionable acting and dialogue.. then episode 5 dropped and it was legitimately one of the best episodes of the live action Disney+ Star Wars shows they have done.
TROS failed on so many levels. It fails as the final movie in a trilogy. It fails as the end of the Skywalker saga. It’s cheapens the end of the OT. It’s wild how much it just does not work.
I remember at the end of The Last Jedi thinking "Wow! What an ending! Where are they going to go from here?" and racking my brain thinking of the possibilities, and then they just took a big wet fart on all of it. I actually wouldn't have minded the whole Palpatine returning thing, since it was done in the Expanded Universe, but the way they did it smelled like doing damage control for something that wasn't damaged. Like they saw all the fans that whined about TLJ and said "Here! Look at this shiny Palpatine! Isn't he shiny?" and ended up just pissing off everybody.
Besides Andor, Bad Batch is the best Star Wars show out right now. Acolyte I'm enjoying so far, and would probably put it slightly above Obi Wan. And I did really enjoy Obi Wan, but mainly because I just love Ewan as that character. But I'm so far enjoying Sol as a character on Acolyte and very interested to see where his character goes.
He's an executive producer and co-creator on the new Batman cartoon. Which isn't directing, so you're still correct.
The argument could be made he’s a total studio shill. He’s a producer first, who has the clout to step into random projects and deliver what the studio wants. And he’s only directed 6 films?? One of which wasn’t an existing IP. That’s wild to me. Anyway, fuck Rise haha.
JJ is a much better producer than a director, and should stick to that for the foreseeable future. i unironically love Cloverfield.
i know nothing about The Acolyte except that Amandla and Dafne are in it (and tiktok may have spoiled a pivotal scene for me)
Just finished my rewatch of this; loved it even more this 2nd go around. Just picture perfect the entire way. Can't wait for season 2
