yeah it's definitely new, if they just never released prisoners at all it would be common knowledge as soon as you arrived there. it's the Empire cracking down after Aldhani to the point people *have* to rebel, which I believe was Luthen's plan from the start one thing I don't understand is when they're first hearing about the Level 2 stuff from the person communicating in sign language. Serkis says something about the message taking a week to get there, what was that about? I think I misheard cos I thought he was saying it took a week to see the hand signals from the other corridor
1) Serkis deserves to be in more things. That line delivery was incredible. 2) Did I miss that Vel is related Mon before this episode? Feel like that took me by surprise
I’m assuming since the hallways are so far apart you can only see the one closest so it has to “travel” from level to level. Not to mention they can only see each other for about a minute.
I thought there was some inference that nobody is getting out because they murdered a whole floor and its now known among the inmates. I took it as it was the first time that a whole floor has had that done to them.
It came across to me as nobody ever getting out was new and was wrapped up in the empire increasing its powers and control, but admittedly I don't really have a grasp how the political stuff even works in SW beyond the most basic broad strokes. The prison struck me as a very shitty place to end up even before, where I'm sure the vast majority of inmates never make it to release anyway due to injuries / abuse / neglect / death, like the deck was severely stacked against anyone getting out healthy and alive anyway, but now they made it official that literally nobody gets released. Andy Serkis is so damn good.
The Vel/Mon Mothma reveal was new. It was hinted at that Vel came from money in the last episode, but it wasn't stated who she was related to.
Knowing the Empire, I would guess that the no one leaving thing is what they’ve always done. It’s pretty clear the prisoners have zero rights. Can’t imagine a government releasing prisoners when they can make them do whatever they want until they’re dead. I think that’s part of what we see with Ulaf. He may not have been moved around or anything, but the message was made very clear to Kino. The Empire will leave them there until they die.
Also not to get too dark, but since the empire deems alien species inferior, are we not so subtly getting hinted at that rather than using them for slave labor like the humans they’re, ya know…
There appears to be a change at the prison. The doctor said, "not now, not after this" in response to Cassian and & Kino at the end of the episode. People must have been getting out at some point or else he wouldn't have said that. The empire is overreacting by changing its penal code, reevaluating sentences, etc. Luthen was hoping things like this would happen in response to Aldhani, he said so very clearly in the prior two episodes.
Yeah people not ever getting out was definitely a new change. They killed that entire floor to try and stop that information from getting around the prison.
I've very strongly disliked Tony Gilroy since he came across like an arrogant prick in the press surrounding the reshoots of Rogue One, and I was disappointed that this show was another prequel for a character from another film because I just feel like they keep telling stories in this small space about the same characters over and over again in what should be a huge expansive universe with infinite stories and possibilities - so this show already had a few strikes against it for me going in. Right now this is neck and neck with The Last Jedi as my favorite modern Star Wars filmed thing.
Yeah, exactly. If word had spread at any point that people weren't getting let out, the prisoners would basically just stop working (because what's the point?) and their slave labor would be gone. Doubtful that they could have hid the information for very long if this wasn't a new thing.
The casting in this show is so phenomenal. Everyone is great. Even Forrest Whitaker was much better than the over the top rogue one Saw (I get that is a few years later and things happen to get him to that point).
apparently the Narkina 5 boots are made out of snowboard boots. as someone who sells these boots daily, I think that’s quite dope.
This show made me I realize that, if I was in Star Wars, I wouldnt be a Jedi. I wouldn't be a rogue. I wouldn't be a smuggler. I would straight up enlist with the Empire and then settle in some mid range paper pushing officer job. And then I blow up on the Death Star and my family collects my life insurance. The american/imperial dream.
Finally up to date and wow, nothing but praise for this show. It's so well made from all aspects. I love the dialogue, the pacing, the sets, the casting, the music, and the masterclass in suspense building. Easily the best Star Wars show Disney + has put out.
