I don’t know why I doubted this album, it’s quite good. Not exactly the direction I wanted after Malibu but I dig it nonetheless. The accent on the closer is something though.
I listened to Malibu upwards of two hundred times so it really isn't quite time to compare the albums for me. I really enjoyed this on my first listen though and caught myself smiling multiple times.
I wish this, along with Vince Staples' FM!, were released in July or August. They are both records built for summer. I'm super happy we got them at all though.
So the last two tracks on here are bonus tracks apparently? The album officially ends with “Cheers”? That would make a lot more sense.
Last two tracks are bonus tracks, it was posted when he announced the tracklist. And yea that last track is def the lowpoint of the album (the only one thank God)
Lyrically this is weaker than Malibu to me, but musically and vocally it's on a while other level. Not that either of those weren't great before, but the instrumentals and production on this is some of the best Ive heard in a while. The blending or organic and synthetic sounds is great and seamless and really reflects his vocal approach, it mirrors his seamless transitions from rapping to singing and the in-betweens. It's probably my favourite album I've heard all year in these categories and this year was already amazing.
Probably controversial but I honestly might like this more than Malibu. I love that album but it had to grow on me, while this album was immediate for me. Production is amazing, features all kill it and Paak has some of his best rapping and singing ever. Totally lived up to the hype I had for it Also since the last two songs are "bonus" songs anyway I'm probably just gonna add Bubblin' and Til It's Over to the end. No idea why he didn't do that himself honestly
I haven't listened to it yet because i'm so fucking tired and wanna be a bit more with it when I give it a proper listen. But the fact there's more rapping on it than Malibu excites me. Now where's that Frank Ocean rap album...
So, I was just looking at the album credits and i'm not seeing any Madlib? Damn shame if he wasn't involved. This is based on nothing at all, but what if the rumoured second album was entirely produced by Madlib. How dope would that be??
I’d be shocked if a second album comes out soon. Seems like he threw a lot of promo into this one. Maybe it was an idea at one point, but you don’t put bonus tracks on one half of a planned double.
