Had to remove the "..." from the beginning of their name to be able to fit the title and it's bugging me not being there.

This band consistently has the absolute worst cover art lol but it’s been a minute since I’ve listened to them

    Listening to it now.

I'm digging it, but it feels like Conrad's voice isn't what it used to be.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

felt pretty mild for them, "Gone" was the only song that really stood out. I think they're running low on ideas much as I hate to say it. oh and just two Jason songs on this album? what the hell man

Caught them on the tour supporting this last night, hadn't seen them in a while (Source Tags anniversary tour, maybe 4-ish years ago).
Different lineup aside from Conrad and Jason, but first time they've had keyboards live since Century of Self which was an added treat.
Talked with Jason after briefly and he mentioned Jamie and Autry recorded a bit on the record (in addition to Cully Symington who's played with Afghan Whigs, Cursive, Sparta) but Jamie's busy touring with Bad Religion and Autry's been out with Thundercat and Flying Lotus.
As far as the record I'm going to need a few more listens to let it fully sink in, but I'm digging a fair bit of it. Seconded on it being pretty Conrad heavy as some of the highlights of the past few records for me are Jason's songs.

a lot of my favourite Trail of Dead songs are Jason's, so frustrating how little they use him

heard this compared to sonic youth. would y'all say that's accurate?

Somewhat. The band has a handful of moments that I would say are reminiscent of Sonic Youth at their more aggressive, but Trail of Dead really do run the gamut as far as genre and sound go.

this album is so wild, I can't believe they put out something this ambitious so late in their career. really impressive stuff

What’s the best album by this band?

Source Tags & Codes is the consensus classic, I have a deep love for Lost Songs though. most of their albums are at the least great

I started with "Century Of Self" and it's still my favorite by them.

threw together a quick guide for you and anyone else it may concern:

start with Source Tags. even though the critical narrative about it is preeetty overblown, thanks to pitchfork, it is a classic album and a wonderful summation of this band's sound, even if nothing else sounds quite like it

from there, if you want more punk: Lost Songs & Madonna

if you want more high-concept, zany prog: Worlds Apart & IX

if you want a fun combo of the two: Tao of the Dead & The Century of Self

again it's almost all good stuff imo, even the albums I didn't list here have their real high points, but those are probably the best avenues to get into the band based on your preferences
