Atonement Dissenter Atonement and Losing It All are my favorites on the record and two of my favorite Anberlin songs of all-time. Ugh. I also might like Stranger Ways more but Dissenter amps me up like crazy.
Atonement Stranger Ways I’m going to go out and say it - Stranger Ways is one of my favourite ever Anberlin songs. I don’t know what it is but the atmosphere they create during the song is just wonderful.
Losing it All (Really like Atonement too) Stranger Ways (Dissenter is one of the very few Anberlin songs that never grew on me. I appreciate them doing something different, just didn't click for me) Already dreading the potential Stranger Ways vs Harbinger matchup!
Man, I love this album. Going back through Vital, I was thinking, "Am I insane for loving Lowborn more?" And listening to Lowborn again, I don't know if it's as flat-out cool as Vital, but it's up there with Cities as the band's most experimental and emotional album. So it wins out in my book. Love that Anberlin closed their career out on two of their best records. What a run.
-Atonement -Dissenter I have a strange liking for Dissenter, even though I realize it's not even that great of a song.
It's an interesting album for sure. I've enjoyed relistening for this over the last few weeks and I do like it overall. I think it has some of the best Anberlin moments from any of their albums. However, I wonder if the experimental nature meant that, whilst it was a great way to go out, I don't find it to be as cohesive as Cities and Vital. It's certainly a very welcome 'farewell album' and I loved everything about the way they chose to go out on their terms.
I wonder if we would think of these albums differently if they had done Lowborn between Cities and Vital? It almost seems like they took the sound of Vital, subtracted the sound of Cities and got Lowborn. Not to take anything away from any of the albums, all of them are so different and amazing yet have a common thread running through all them. Seriously, how amazing is the Cities, Vital/Devotion, and Lowborn stretch of albums? (I realize NS, DitW are in there too). Makes me wonder what direction they would have gone with the next album? They really ended by going out on top and leaving fans wanting more
If Anberlin ever made one more album I'd want to hear them write one more in the style of Blueprints or NTFP. I was dying for them to go all out on experimentation which they did with Lowborn. Hearing a classic-sounding Anberlin album with the musical chops they harnessed late in their career would be amazing. I also think if they made a record without touring, that wouldn't put strain on the band or take away from the way they ended things. And I actually don't think a reunion album is entirely implausible as them getting back together. They all recorded Lowborn separately anyway.
On the anberlinlyrics.tumblr, Stephen says about Stranger Ways, “The title will be known only to those at AP.net.” Anyone remember what this is about?
There was a song title generator based on Smiths songs or something and he posted in the comments Stranger Ways.
Will probably run rule this with another vote in atonement’s favor but for the sake of consistency I’ll keep it open. Losing It All: 8 Atonement: 11 Stranger Ways: 15 Dissenter: 4 I remember when I first heard dissenter I was blown away and so excited to see what everyone else thought, as they’d finally delivered a heavy song after all these years, and everyone thought it sucked and I was mad at them and now I’m mad again. But stranger ways is so good too so I can overcome. Y’all messed up that first one though, atonement is boring.
