I feel like I remember Stephen saying at some point that the song was about his brother or one of his best friends... I could be confusing it with another song, though, because I also remember him saying that some of the lyrics in the verses of Inevitable (the lyrics about when he was a kid) were about his brother, too. Regardless, I’ve always heard Cadence as being a tribute to a close friend who deepened Stephen’s religious beliefs.
You're right. Cadence is about his brother Paul and the verses of Inevitable are actually about his brother originally.
That's good to know. Thank you for enlightening me. It doesn't really change how I feel about the lyrics and how I hear them though. I grew up Catholic, so it's not that I have anything against Christian/religious music, but those kinds of lyrics have always made me a little uncomfortable when it feels like it's trending towards worship music.
First tally! Foreign Language: 6 Cadence: 7 Naive Orleans: 4 Glass to the Arson: 9 Readyfuels: 11 Change The World: 2 Historically b sides have been attached to their respective albums; i figured we’d just keep doing that and do a separate bracket for Lost Songs. That means the vital bracket will be huge since devotion came out lol. Any other thoughts? Naive? Agree with all of this, especially the end, except i didn’t go to the same shows haha
Cadence – This is more of a vote against "Foreign Language". I used to love it, but it's honestly pretty embarrassing. Naïve Orleans – I listened to this song a ton during a big breakup back in 2004 and it will always hold a special place for helping me get through that. Change the World – "Readyfuels" is a great opener, but "Change the World" has always been my favorite song from this album.
What would that mean for The Haunting and Downtown Song, since those are b-sides? Would those be with their respective albums or on the Lost Songs bracket?
since lost songs was a legit release i was going to keep them on there, though now that i think of it i believe lost songs also has some that were actually released on other albums; we could just take those out?
I forever stand by The Haunting being in the lower half of their discography. Will never understand the level of love that ones get compared to a lot of the others.
i think haunting may be a top 10 song but i don't get the love for *fin. the bridge is outstanding but the rest of the song is just there for me.
I think both songs are really similar and have the same structure for the most part, probably why it was left off Cities despite being a great song.
I'm also thinking of songs like "I'd Like to Die" and "Hell or High Water" and "Heavier Things Remain" which were all unofficial releases and IMO very good Anberlin songs.
Was "I'd Like to Die" only on their live acoustic album? I love that album. That version of Take Me How You Found Me is sooooo much better than the album version.
The thing about anberlin b-sides is they are better than some bands album tracks. What a band. Pretty sure I said those exact words verbatim once before, but it's absolutely true. Devotion is an 18 track album that has very little filler imo. 4 of those songs are Vital outtakes and they hold up with the rest of the album.
Anberlin’s b-sides probably make up like, 50% of my top 20 Anberlin songs honestly. I’m always in awe of how they cut some of these from the records. Haha
I don’t listen to Anberlin nearly enough. Thanks for resurrecting this thread and giving me an excuse to listen to some of these jams.
