Gonna have to agree here. The rest of the band has the right to pursue their dreams and happiness. You don’t have to support everyone’s dreams and happiness but you don’t have to be against it either. What’s so hard about just saying “this isn’t for me” and moving on? But also yeah the band should just ignore it. There’s clearly plenty of people that like it so focus on that. FWIW, Anberlin is probably a top 10 band for me and they probably wouldn’t have been a top 50 band for me had they never had Stephen. But I don’t wish them any ill will for continuing. Now it would be one thing if Stephen was against this.

Shifting the focus a bit but do we think anberlin is the members’ primary source of income at this stage of their career? They were effectively a part time band until shifting into higher gear with matty and based on the “artsy” comment it doesn’t sound like that mini-era paid the bills. it’s impressive if so.

no clue what Joey, Christian, and Deon were doing before the reunion (maybe Joey was producing?). i know Nate had King State until it closed and maybe did some modelling too. i think Stephen said on a podcast once that he was working at a record label before starting his church. i'm assuming Matty has only ever done MMF before joining, but i don't care to look

IMO, record new music with a new vocalist, tour, all that's fine.

Why re-record an album that was doing just fine? Any band re-recording just seems like a shameless nostalgia cash-in, even with no lineup changes.

I'm fairly sure it's been discussed in this thread before, but I think it all depends on the circumstances. Like Thrice re-recording TAITA was quite successful. I love the original, but also thoroughly enjoy their new version for being its own thing. It brings new life to the album. Nevertake does not fall into that category for me.

I think a band getting a new vocalist and then re-recording songs from their prior lineup makes sense, as long the new version doesn’t, like, replace the original. Doing a “greatest hits” of songs in rotation for them live probably makes more sense to me, personally, than a full album? But whatever. I love TAITA Revisited and Fearless (Taylor’s Version), so what do I know?

Anyways. Found out about this Nevertake or whatever and gave some random songs a shot. No individual moment grated on me per se, but ‘twas all bland af to me. Not that I was still keeping up with Anberlin classic, but this is probably the last nail in anything they do being of interest to me.

They should’ve done a Linkin Park and gotten a woman to be their new singer (preferably without the concerning connections to Scientology, etc).

Anyone have a discount code for T&N? Want to get NTFP but $50 is too steep for me.

i stumbled upon a review of it a couple days ago that called it "a total waste of time", so there are definitely other folks out there that don't enjoy any of Matty's ventures

I wonder if there’s a mirror thread for MMF somewhere where people are saying his time being split between Anberlin and MMF is hurting the MMF output.

i remember when he joined he was saying MMF was still his first priority, so it says a lot that their new album is also bad when that's still his primary focus

Fun fact, MMF could also refer to Marty McFly

I don't even know if I'd like Marty's voice if I heard it, but it has to be better than the robot session musicians he hired to do vocals on everything... especially for this song. Holy christ there's probably more layers of vocals in that one clip than the entirety of the original album had layers total across the whole thing.

i thought his vocals on the few songs ive heard are fine...but sweet baby jesus, this approach sounds terrible on that song.

I get better about all this, then I read all the overwhelmingly positive comments online and I feel like I'm on another planet.

There's a song out there featuring Stephen called "Post-Heist" by Foxbat. While it's a song that doesn't know what it should be (especially with the unnecessary screaming bridge), it's a good peek into Stephen's current vocal output. I think the mix they did on his voice doesn't do him any justice; I barely could tell it was him at the beginning. You can tell he's still trying new stuff vocally which means he's still operating on the EP level output which makes me sad we aren't getting "pushed to the limit" Anberlin tracks similar to the EP's.

Sorry, I can't link music stuff from my work PC or I totally would.

Big ol' RIP to the "too artsy" direction of the EPs I guess after the comments lately

The version of the band I care most about these days :(

I think the vibe of this photo sums up what I do NOT like about Anberlin since Malachi joined:
