Oh god I remember seeing the clip of him railing about this. If I remember correctly they booted him off stage in the midst of his whining lol.
yup. he got on stage and started saying the church was possessed, the pastor shouted "Mark, that's enough!" from the audience, called him up on stage later to have an honest conversation about it and "forgive" each other, but then they reignited it the next day. they're both foolish though. the lead pastor has a huge history of spouting hurtful rhetoric against Catholics/Hindus/Muslims/Mormons/the LGBTQ community, pushed to repeal anti-discrimination laws from the pulpit (the thing that drove me out of the church), has covered up many instances of sexual abuse/pedophilia, confronted members about tithing in front of other congregants, and makes people sign NDAs to voice complaints about the church that ultimately get shot down. the ironic thing is that i only discovered Anberlin because someone always played their music over the youth center's lobby speakers
I heard a little bit about that, but had to google to jog my memory. I’d make a Religious Trauma thread, but I feel like it might be opening a can of worms for mods.
Ohhhhhhhhhh dear. Oh dear. I….oh dear. Fun fact (?): Did you know that the organization behind Acquire The Fire, Teen Mania, was later defined as a cult? From wiki: Based on Teen Mania's doctrines and behavior, some Christian mental health professionals have labeled it a cult.[48][49] In an MSNBCdocumentary, counselors Doug and Wendy Duncan identified all of Robert Jay Lifton's "Eight Criteria for Thought Reform" in the Honor Academy program, as described in personal accounts and video footage from several alumni and former staff spanning the past twelve years.[6] The documentary won an investigative reporting award from the Council on International Nontheatrical Events (CINE).[50] A blog published by a former intern, entitled "Recovering Alumni," has raised concerns about recurring spiritual abuse and health and safety issues at the Honor Academy, publishing firsthand accounts from many other interns alleging mistreatment over the past 15 years to the present. In an interview in the Tyler Morning Telegraph, the blog's author claimed, based on an email list, that about 200 Honor Academy alumni consider themselves "recovering."[49] It…squares up with a lot of what I remember. I was at the event in Michigan as a young teen where they trotted out Gerald Ford to lead us in some nationalistic screed about saving the soul of America.
Ah! At my date, they split up the boys and girls and I got to go to a seminar about abstinence where they blamed it all on women for being temptresses. Then they wheeled out a cart full of old computer monitors and invited kids to come up and smash them with aluminum bats to keep away the temptation!!
at least you guys got to smash shit. any time our church did a talk like this, they just let us stew in the guilt and have guys come up to the leaders at the front to privately "confess their sins"
Since I don't know what any of the other members actually look like, the shirt having Maddy front and center just reminds me of those parody shirts that say Nirvana but have a picture of Hanson or Blink 182 with a picture of the Malcolm in the Middle guys
I wrote out a big response to that too and deleted it. That’s been my go-to move on here with this band lately lol
