It’s more about starting with them haha Taylor Swift has to do with rights. Thrice was from them never loving fully how it came out production wise. We also know Dustin isn’t a fan of his vocals before Alchemy. So some small improvements were made and they had some friends sing on it. It came out great! This could have been seen as an attempt like that, but instead it’s an abomination.
I guess seeing that the rest of the guys in anberlin think this sounds good enough to put it into the world makes me seriously consider whether the guys in anberlin have suspect decision making skills or musical awareness. This is objectively bad. No matter how many times I try I get 5-10 seconds into Mattys vocals and immediately convulse.
I mean, if his role is just going to be a back up for Marty at times, I’m sure it’s all cordial between them. And I’d assume if that is his only role moving forward, it makes sense to have Marty on more material, original or not. But since this all sucks shit, who knows.
They are trying to make money and putting this out will get them streams surrounding the 20 year tour hype.
The highs of the post-reunion EPs (and the livestreams tbh) are really starting to be balanced out by the lows of... *gestures broadly*
So incredibly disappointed with the last ~2-3 years of this band. Really tarnishing the legacy they created within the scene. I wonder if their contemporaries feel the same as the fans
will it though? i don't know if this would have the commercial pull people think it would. someone like Taylor Swift can get away with having her rerecordings outperform the originals because she a) includes new songs, b) markets the physical copies as collector's items, and c) effectively sold her listeners on a narrative that listening to the old versions puts money in the pockets of someone who harassed her. similar scenario for Thrice like Greg said. idk if it's been outperforming the original, but the new version of TAITA a) worked to correct production issues, b) included features, c) paid tribute to the original for its anniversary, and d) maybe acted as an opportunity to own the album on vinyl for those who didn't have it? (idk how often the original was repressed, but i know some Thrice vinyl is hard to come by) i don't think Anberlin has any of these things going for them other than wanting to celebrate the album's anniversary (especially now that the original has been repressed). unless someone's just a big fan of Matty, i think most people are still gonna stream the original more than the new version - even if they're seeing them on this tour.
I legit think it’s just to get MMF fans to listen to it. They realized it needed to be shitty in order to make it palatable for that fanbase.
I have a friend who is really into all the squeaky-clean, generic post-hardcore like MMF, and I can confirm he showed no interest in the band until Marty joined and now he’s hyped for every new Anberlin song. Honestly wild the flip. The MMF fan is excited for Anberlin, and the Anberlin fan cannot even stomach a whole new song by the band anymore.
I’m genuinely confused by the weird effect/processing that shows up on the vocals on EVERY song that Matty sings. There’s no way he/the band actually think it sounds good right?
it is the thing that irks me most about modern mainstream posthardcore. Every band has some dude with the same voice, processed beyond what even a top 40 pop artist has done, and then layered to hell with awful effects, pointless doubles, and bad harmonies until all that’s left is what someone here once put as “auditory tinfoil” and I don’t think there’s a more accurate description. It sounds bad, especially over Anberlin instrumentals. It’s just a really unfortunate trend in the genre Marty comes from.
Auditory tinfoil is the perfect term for it. I’m not super familiar with MMF or bands in that genre so hearing that type of effect over an Anberlin song was even more jarring.
This thread would implode even more than it already has if Anberlin became a massive hit with Marty on vocals.
even with processing, it really is amazing how every male with tattoos has the same voice in this decade. Even in metalcore I feel like, with few exceptions, I’ve only heard 1 scream in 7 years and it’s a boring bro growl.
Maybe I don't know radio rock right now the best, but I'd say even like an Imagine Dragons song has less vocal processing than anything Marty sings on. I feel like the trend in radio is not this production style, but it's massive in the genre bands like MMF or Our Last Night are in. I really do not know the history of how we got here, but I was hoping this style would die with the 2010's. It's quite literally my least favorite thing any band could do with a mix.
Also just a random thing I just noticed thanks to Reddit, they reuploaded the original Never Take Friendship Personal to at least Apple Music, "A Day Late" is now "Day Late Friend" for whatever reason... but it's the same weird quiet master.
the Day Late Friend naming error has existed since i was in high school. don't think it's ever been fixed.
