Marty is just smart for Smarty, which is evident of what the band is doing, being a bunch of smarties
I was surprised to hear the re record as well. When fans were talking about their experience with the band I kept thinking “where have I heard this before?”
I think August Burns Red just did this for Thrill Seeker. But the difference is that Jake Luhrs is the definitive ABR vocalist who has been on every album since and whose vocals are responsible for their success and not like this Marty situation at all.
I feel like a lot of these decisions are for money. I’m conflicted on that point as I respect that people have got to earn a living, but it dilutes the magic and creativity, particularly when it involves iconic music such as this example.
They just shared another one on instagram for Never Take Friendship Personal. Definitely a new full recording and not just new vocals. I hate it.
They haven’t released any of these re-records though have they? My interpretation of this was just that they were using his vocals on that to promote the anniv tour so you didn’t hear Stephen’s vox and then hear Matty’s live. I’m not super bothered by the whole thing in the end. Nate and the band sound like they are super pumped to be playing with Matty regardless. And his interview on Nate’s podcast sounds like he really respects the band and wants to help it build success and I’m hoping that will pay of for them.
OOOOOOOOR what if it was Mattys singing on the Sparrow Sleeps album? Eeeeh?! :D … I’ll show myself out.
Just got back from the Houston show and it was really, really fun. The sound mix wasn’t the best and the bass kinda sounded like crap for Copeland and Anberlin, like it was muddy, but didn’t take away from their energy or my enjoyment of the show. Matty spoke about how much he loves NTFP and how lucky he feels to be a part of this tour. In fact when they took the stage the introductions were “Hi I’m Matty, and they are Anberlin” and honestly he seems to be having the time of his life and the guys looked like they had a blast. They even took time afterwards to take photos and chat with whoever wanted to, which was rad. For me this show was great because almost twenty years ago to the week I saw Anberlin at the tooth and nail showcase at sxsw (with waking Ashland, mae, mewithoutyou, underoath) and the next night Copeland. So my inner college-age me was losing his shit tonight. Copeland was fantastic even though Aaron was sick, and I got my vinyl of In Motion signed (I got the cd signed at sxsw… for a friend… not for me… so I rectified that). Anberlin was really tight and clicked in and super fun to watch. I know there’s a contingent that doesn’t like having Matty there- but he was solid. And the other guys are still the same as always, except even tighter as a band now. Anberlin played the album, then stepped off stage, and returned to play another handful of songs (The Resistance, Seven, High Stakes, Impossible, and Godspeed). Overall a great show (sadly I missed The Dangerous Summer and I’m really bummed about that) and had a good time. Matty even recorded a quick video for my seven year old who has become a big fan of the band and “Walk Alone.” Damn good evening.
When I saw them in December they played Readyfuels and Matty said that the band told him that he can pick any song out of their catalog to do on shows and he picked that one because he wanted to show appreciation to the hardcore fans of the band. He seemed like he is genuinely an Anberlin fan living his dream.
Absolutely nobody who hates that Marty is singing cares how big a fan he is. It’s completely irrelevant. I don’t like his voice on these songs. It’s that simple. Plus, as a fan, there are way better songs to pick if given the choice. That song is the most obvious crowd pleaser. I loved it when they played it instead of Burns Out Brighter at the NS show I went to. But that’s a huge upgrade in a song being played haha
Man I'm not gonna lie, I love Burn Out Brighter and I'd be super bummed if I were at that New Surrender show haha. I don't get the band's disdain for that song.
It’s an interesting juxtaposition: being a huge fan of Anberlin and living out your dream of singing for them, contrasted with the fact that no huge fan of Anberlin wants the band to have a different singer.
Oh god, I’m so sorry, everyone. Now that I have to do this, I’ll be upfront and honest here. My mic will only be on in between songs. During the songs, we are just going to play Stephen’s vocals from a recording. I may occasionally throw in some back up vocals, but minimal at most. Never die or whatever that slogan they used was.
Lmao hey guys, would you go to an Anberlin show if it was the four members playing live to Stephen's album vocals? Christian does most of the in-between song talking anyway
I don’t have any particular hate for it. But it was hilarious in the moment. This is in context with a bunch of stories they told throughout the set of all the issues and such they had during that time. The band hates the song haha I think everyone there had fun with it.
the song doesn't get a mention in the booklet for the Help Yourself boxset, but the entry about New Surrender gives you a taste of the difficulty of making the album.
