I am still in awe at how many mutual anberlin-MMF fans there are. Given how popular the latter still are, and the fact they’re both longstanding scene bands, I expected to see plenty of positive comments (esp from primary MMF fans) but thought they’d be crowded out by skeptical/critical ones (esp primary anberlin fans). Feel like this has gone over much better than singer changes usually do. Apparently the venn diagram of each bands’ devout followers is much closer to a circle than I thought.

  5. I think that it’s only two songs helps? They’re both pretty bad but it’s at least 90% the Anberlin everyone knows and loves.

Still mad we didn’t get a full new album and instead got the two (impeccable) EP’s with two new songs on and YEAH NEW VEGA OUT NOW

Yea I hate the rerelease strategy. Messes up Apple Music sorting/play counts lol albums and EPs should be distinct!

part of me thinks that overlap might have something to do with their connections to Christian audiences? i know neither is on paper, but their two frontmen are, and i can remember several friends from church listening to both way back in the day?

I had the same thought and I think you’re absolutely right, but again, I expected less-overlapping anberlin fans to generally be a bit more stubborn and vocal in their opposition. I would also assume anberlin fans to be slightly older/mature so maybe they just don’t think it’s worth it. I’m making a lot of assumptions here but, well, we’re talking about anberlin. And MMF lol.

fair point. part of me also wonders if some people just aren't cognizant of it? like i had a friend who wasn't aware they made any music beyond DITW, so when Silverline came out, he was surprised to learn they had released 2 additional album, broken up, got back together, and started making more music. so i think you're right in that they probably don't know and/or don't care.

How’s the sequencing of the album? I almost made my own when the eps dropped but wanted to give the band the benefit of the doubt

Asking should've been track 11. other than that, it was semi-jarring at first, but i got used to it

I added the new songs to my library but I will continue to only listen to the others as their respective EPs. Convinced is perfect as it is.

There's a handful of songs here that would've made a perfect opener, but I don't think Animals is one of them. Such an odd choice to open the record, imo.

    Ronstile.

Really digging Vega as a full length. Would have loved one or two more Matty songs or a full EP with him and then Vega with those songs, but this album is great. I listened to the EPs a couple times when they released but haven’t spent a lot of time with them. Have historically not been a fan of MMF or Matty Mullins, but his songs and parts on Vega rip. As a reformed band rolling with the punches all of this is working for me. I wouldn’t go to a show specifically to see them but if they were on a tour with another band I love I would be very interested to see a set with Matty. (I was at the Underoath show they reformed at and would love a full tour with Underoath headlining and Anberlin doing direct support) Sounds like they have 5 songs in the can with him on vocals. I do hope Stephen has a couple songs on the next one and I think it would be a huge missed opportunity if they don’t do a song with trading vocal parts. As a pretty casual fan I think this whole pivot is pretty rad.

Hopefully we don't have to wait two years to hear new music.

  16. Just started my first listen and that was my immediate thought but I may be biased because that was my least favorite out of the EPs. I do think it flows more or less well afterwards even though I'm used to the EPs' respective sequencings.

Thinking about the future, we got Matty on a pop-punky track and an alt metal one... but some of my favorite moments in the latter part of their career are where they really let their love for new wave and synthpop show. Good thing is this album is full of them! Stephen's voice is a perfect fit because his tone, as weird as that may sound, always felt synth like to my ears. It approaches that of a a supersaw if you add some reverb or effects on it. "Circles" is a good example here.

I can't envision Matty on any eventual new songs with that 80s synthy/dreamy soundscape. I'd love to be proven wrong, but I'm not convinced his voice lends itself well to it.

i want a full Anberlin album that sounds like Nothing More (but only if it's Stephen singing). that one has grown on me to be one of my favorite closers.

  18. Yeah from the synthier songs, that one and Nothing Lost are my favorites

Super silly not to start the record off with 7 - intro of new lead vocalist and intro to Vega era (huge Jonny Craig vibes lol).

I think after spending way more time with these “new” songs - even well past their initial release - they got back together and put out two eps with one eps worth of good shit. Two Graves, Nothing Lost and Lacerate are massive. Adding two, generic, songs with them just balances the numbers in the wrong way.

Animals sounds like a completely different song on this album. Was it re-recorded or re-mastered or something? Maybe it’s just my ears

    everything is remastered apparently.

one mastering complaint i have is that while Lacerate is more even volume-wise, there's a slight distortion on the opening snare hit in the original version that somehow became incredibly distorted on the album. i thought it was a pressing error on the vinyl, but it's there digitally too.
