I don’t necessarily think he sounds bad, I just think he sounds super sterile and I find it completely uninteresting
I think his singing style fits that clip better than feel good drag but I echo all the other negative sentiments. No character to his voice or singing at all.
Makes me wish they went for a more distinctive singer with the risk of alienating the fanbase even more than someone with such nondescript vocals, as much as I appreciate his work on Memphis May Fire.
I was pretty forgiving of the first take, but by the third one I have now changed my tune haha, I'm over this.
I'm sure he's got a fine voice, but I can't hear it because of all the layering and such. Not a fan of this style.
The contrast between heights of the new eps and the very specific overall vibe and sound of Matty is wild. Killer music and a left field / unusual replacement > another hiatus. my interest is peaked for the album they’re writing. As far as I can tell Stephen is still writing and recording. I’m sure matty will bring in a lot of die hards from his world and that will be cool for anberlin, but there is no chance I am going to one of those shows.
Had to physically remove my headphones after hearing how he sang the "Complaints of violins..." line... Good grief, man.
Fans on their socials seem to love it. Maybe once upon a time this would’ve sounded great on a pop punk (or whatever) goes metal compilation but it’s 2023 man.
It’s difficult to tell who Anberlin fans are these days…is the band still pulling people mostly because of their back catalog or are the new EPs doing some extra lifting for them? It’s basically been 10 years since, arguably, the height of their popularity. I haven’t been to an Anberlin show in a very long time, so I don’t have a good feel for all this.
Yeah it's important to note these videos are posted on Matty 's page with Anberlin as collaborator, so his fans certainly are the main demographic posting comments
Stephen has some of the most unique, irreplaceable vocals in the scene and it feels like the band is either forgetting that, or at the very least underestimating Stephen's talent. Strange move all around.
The guys minus Stephen should just start their own band. I’d rather see Joey, Nate, Deon, and Christian play something totally different (Christian and Deon had a band going at one point) under a name that isn’t Anberlin. When Stephen wants to play too, they could do Anberlin gigs and they’d be huge and special. I know this isn’t realistic, but it feels like it would be more respectful to the band’s legacy.
I’m guessing with Matty that a big part of this is that he’s STOKED to do it. I’m really guessing he’ll bring good energy to the show, even though no one can match Stephen in that regard.
I really wanted to like this but it just sounds so forced and unnatural. The videos they’re posting are only making it worse for me.
iirc, they might be releasing more in 2024, which would be badass. on an unrelated note, i can no longer access Carrollhood's stuff on Apple Music, so i just have my own copies uploaded (although surprisingly they matched with the system's copies despite being taken down). anyone else experiencing this on Apple Music or any other streaming platform?
I get that and it'd be ideal but ultimately I figure keeping everything under the Anberlin brand pays their bills.
