The awful transition between the bridge and the last chorus in Dissenter hurts the song pretty bad in my eyes. I like the rest of it though. Maybe they just shouldn't have put a soft and dreamy bridge in that song.

I feel like you stole these thoughts straight out of my head...my feelings exactly. NS has grown on me since then but I definitely felt let down at first

I think Breaking is a good one too, though it may be a bit silly

The worst part about New Surrender is the strain of rock songs exemplified by the bland-ass remake of "Feel Good Drag". Give me more songs like "Haight Street" and "Younglife" and you'd have an album.

I love that sudden change myself, but yeah it's weird.

"Disappear" being released first and also being so Cities-esque is one of the primary reasons NS was such a disappointing listen initially. I loved that song, but the rest of the album sounded nothing like it.

All of this Anberlin talk got me to relisten to Devotion in full tonight. Just the fact that they could take Vital, throw in 4 Vital outtakes and 3 new songs, and have an 18 track album with almost zero filler speaks to how strong the songwriting was in that period of their career.

Doesn't Devotion have the live acoustic show too? That is one of my favorite things they have ever released.

This all the way, loved going through that album cycle for Vital then getting Devotion, so greart

Me too, the track I always go back to is I'd Like To Die, *sigh*...sad to have them gone still

The guitar in the intro is so beautiful sounding. My favorite versions of Take Me (As You Found Me), Inevitable, Breaking, Type Three and Feel Good Drag are on that set. I always go back to those. What Stephen does with his voice in Take Me live is so so so fantastic.

    I do not exist.

To my shame, I never picked up Devotion.

Terrible, especially as Vital is probably my favourite album from them (or at least rivals Cities).

listening through NTFP and completely forgot Phil Sneed was on The Runaways. Thats a sick feature.

As a huge SOTY fan, I never knew that. I need a relisten. It's because of SOTY taking them out of tour for that I even got into Anberlin.

him and stephen trade vocals back and forth in the bridge, one of the better moments of the album honestly. I was never a huge fan of SOTY, but when phil filled in for anthony green when he left saosin he was incredible, and greek fire has some jams.

Shame you aren't into SOTY more, they are fantastic. Agreed, Greek Fire also has some good songs as well.

One show I wish I could find in it's entirety on youtube of something is where Stephen had to cancel and Dan and Phil from SOTY filled in on vocals for the whole show.

Dead American is weird. I loved it so much when it released that I thought it rivaled Self-Starter (my favorite on Vital/Devotion) but it got old pretty fast. I still like it a lot but it's repetitive.

Is Self-Starter-Little Tyrants-Other Side the best 3 song combo they have on an album?

I think the first 3 tracks on NTFP are flawless.

Can you make it a run of 4? If so, it's:

    "Paperthin Hymn"
    "Stationary Stationery"
    "(The Symphony of) Blase"
    "A Day Late"

My gut reaction was no but now that I look at the discog that's definitely up there. I'm not huge on other side but I realize now that their best songs on each album are pretty spread out.

I think any 4 song run from unwinding cable car to fin on cities would be great, and I really like desires-type three-orpheum-modern age

Inevitable-Dismantle.Repair-(*fin) has to be up there just because of the last two songs being perfect.

Even if it were limited to 3, I think Paperthin to Symphony of Blasé is still up there.

I agree, their best songs are all spread out on each album, I thought it was a fun question. Little Tyrants is one of my favs, I wish there were more songs like that in their discography.

Not to throw any shade to Inevitable, its a great slow song, but if Reclusion was after instead that would probably be my fav 3 in a row.
