Oh yeah no worries, I didn't mean to imply that you felt that way, I just remember seeing a lot of complaints at the time it came out
I love this song I love the whole album really. I mean I think them putting out anything after Cities would've been a struggle since that album is so top notch, but maybe it was the poppiness/happier atmosphere that threw me off back when it came out....I quickly got over that though, those songs rule and they're so nostalgic feeling, I love it.
Love The Resistance, Retrace, Breathe, Haight St, and miserabile visu a lot. My most played on that album for sure
Haight Street is cheesy as all get out, but it's catchy so it gets a pass from me. Breaking and Disappear are the true gems on New Surrender though.
Breaking, Haight St and Soft Skeletons are my favorites off New Surrender... they are all straightforward songs, but they're done so well and the melodies are so catchy it's like candy to me.
NS is so fun. Disappear being released first really threw me off though. Probably the best song on the album and the only Cities-esque song and it made the initial listen so disappointing.
I relistened to NS from front to back for the first time in a while yesterday and it’s Such pop rock goodness. I wonder if they would have gotten huge if TSwift actually ended up covering Breathe.
I didn't know that was almost a thing, but here's an interesting thought: Let's say she did cover it and it was around the album cycle for NS. They probably would've stayed the pop-rock course with their newfound popularity right? We might have never got a Vital-tier album from them. I dunno. Maybe. Just some food for thought, a fun thing to think about.
I do love me some NS. Definitely played it more than I thought I would and find myself playing it front to back often
Retrace is in the running for my least favorite Anberlin song right alongside Younglife to be honest (I still like both).
No idea why I want to say this but if the Resistance was on Cities, it’d be a top 3 album for me. It’s already a top 5.
