Impossible is great. One of my gripes on To The Wolves is that the bridge feels too similar to the bridge on Impossible and not as good.
I think Closer is probably the worst song they ever made. Feel Good Drag is my second favourite song on either record after Breaking but it's my least favourite on NTFP which shows how weak those two albums are in comparison.
Every time I play Vital I am still blown away and somewhat surprised even though I’ve listened to it a million times. Haha
I’ll out myself...NS is great, for me. I would put it near the bottom of my list but I sure listen to it with fondness
This is me. It came out at the height of my Anberlin fandom, and I have lot of emotional/nostalgic connection to it. If I listened to it for the first time today, it would probably easily be my least favorite.
Heh, closer is top 3 on the album for me bc I think it’s one of their most epic sounding choruses. Meanwhile, I think breaking is one of their worst lyrical songs. Hate the chorus melody too.
Inevitable - Dismantle. Repair - Fin Orpheum - Modern Age - God, Drugs and Sex. Those are my favorite Anberlin runs.
I don’t really feel like the lyrics on DITW are worse than any other album, they’re just approached in a more succinct and barebones way
Adelaide-Whisper-Cable Car is perfect, as is You Belong Here-Pray Tell-Art of War, as is Stationary-Blase-A Day Late
i listened to NS today and it does not hold up at all, even some of the songs i used to like a lot. i'm not a big fan of the vocals on that record. resistance still rocks tho
Bc it’s one of the few worse than breaking! Outside of NS this is probably my least favorite 3 song run haha i know I go too hard on PT and AOW and I do like them but I think YBH is probably the laziest anberlin song, even after considering they re-recorded FGD. The lyrics and chorus are so bland to me. Alright sorry for the negative posts. I’ve been doing a discog deep dive this week and they’re all great.
See I just dont get that. PT and AOW for me are two of the best songs on DITW and most interesting. They have alot going on musically and it works. But I suppose that is the mark of a great band when you can argue about their best music
Yeaaaa I just don’t hear it haha. They feel way too underdeveloped to me. But you are right, as the brackets showed there is wild variation in favorites and that’s a good thing.
I felt like Thrice’s Everything Belongs was an update on You Belong Here. I’m not big on either song.
You Belong Here is top 3 on Dark for me. That says more about how weak the album is than how strong that song is though...
I think We Owe This To Ourselves, Impossible, Pray Tell, and Art of War are a cut above the rest on here. Depraved is underrated though, it's a pretty good closer.
I'm curious to know if there's a correlation between people who dislike Art of War and people who dislike Lowborn. I feel like they are both examples of the band really nailing a specific kind of slow-burning moodiness. Not that every song on Lowborn is slow-burning, but overall I tend to view it as that kind of album. (And I love it!)
Interesting! I never thought about it this way, but if you took the moodiness of DITW and mixed it with elements of Vital, that is pretty close to what we got on Lowborn!
It’s funny. Lowborn is my #2 Anberlin album and Art of War is actually one of my least favorites on DITW. But part of that is the chorus just sounds really uninspired in comparison to the rest of the song, which is otherwise excellent. Agreed though. I love the way they expound on the general mood with Lowborn. Armageddon is a great example.
I love everything about Art of War except for the chorus. It just seems bland to me compared with everything surrounding it.
