It is so weird to me that pray tell and art of war keep coming up as favorites, I fend them so underwhelming
Today I was told that I wasn’t allowed to call (*fin) one of the greatest songs ever because I haven’t listened to the new Hellions album ♂️
I love this and you have 1 and 2 completely correct. My favourite Anberlin three song streaks right there! I’d have to think for number 3.
So many questions, but namely, who said this, what does this mean, who is Hellions, how does their new album correlate with (*fin), and you’re a male, huh?
That whole album is weak as hell. I'm sitting here scratching my head at this thread. Some people have it above Cities? Fin alone is better than that whole album.
Haha a girl at work said this to me. Hellions are a hardcore(?) band from here in Sydney, they’re doing fairly well for themselves but I do not like them at all. I simply showed her that I was listening to (*fin) and was like “best song ever” and she was like “how can you say that when you haven’t listened to the new hellions album?!” and yes, male haha
I think DITW , is severely underrated and overhated tbh. It does contain the majority of their slowest songs and more stripped back compositions, but I think it's done really well. The songs are written well and the instrumentals are simple yet still give off an experimental vibe. I feel like the majority of dislike comes from the album's slower tempo and times barebone lyrics. I think that plays a huge factor in why Vital is so hard hitting
My favourite songs by the band are Fin, Unwinding Cable Car, Inevitable and The Symphony of Blase. I have no problem with slow songs. The shit lyrics are a big part of why I dislike it though, they just make the songs feel so lazy to me. To the point where it's annoying to listen to. I just don't think they do anything interesting or exciting on that album and all of the songs are poorly written.
totally understand that. for some people, it's usually easier to reflect on something in hindsight and not in the midst of it. if i'd been in their shoes, odds are, i wouldn't have wanted to do it either. not a critique on you at all, just an observation of them dealing with the ending of a giant chunk of their life and processing the whole thing.
Agreed. Just revisited DITW and I was soooo bored. I appreciate aspects of it but to say it's a better album than Cities is a massive disqualifier.
It's interesting to see so many mixed opinions on DIAWLIAP. I love it, but it's definitely not my favorite. For me personally it's probably Cities > Vital > DIAW > everything else. I can't imagine being bored listening to this one, but to each their own haha.
I adored Dark when it first came out and I think my enjoyment of it has dipped a little bit since then, but I still really like it
My band got to play as main support to Anberlin during their UK farewell tour back in 2014, which was a dream come true for me. I grew up listening to Anberlin and they were one of a few bands who made me want to start creating and playing music. They were the nicest and most hospital guys! I'm excited to see them back in any capacity!
Exactly my experience. Now it ranks lower but I still enjoy it for what it is. Also I heard these songs live with a girl who is now my wife so they hold some emotional significance.
I don't think many people put Dark above Cities. I certainly don't. Changing up my ranking. Vital (including all the bonus tracks) Cities NTFP DITW Lowborn New Surrender Blueprints
The more I think about it, the more I believe this is more than just a one-off for them. I really feel like they would come out and confirm that it's just a one-off show for them. I think they aren't saying anything right now so that they get the tickets sold for the Tampa show. Then next year they'll announce a slew of dates. Kinda how UØ came back with one festival date and no other info until they announced the rebirth tour.
Vital is firmly my favorite, followed by cities, but after that it really is a matter of mood, aside from NS which is definitely last lolz. Normally I really don’t like more stripped down albums in the vein of DITW but aside from some lazy lyricism I do think the execution was quite good. Also idk if this is a thing but it’s one of my all time favorite album arts and I think that has a positive subconscious effect.
That's amazing! What's your band? I live in the UK but I was on holiday when the final tour was on. Absolutely gutting to miss it.
Also, I'm in the camp that thinks that DITW is a great album. Vital and Cities are their standout works but DITW, Lowborn and NTFP are all fantastic releases. New Surrender has some highlights but I'll pick one of the others before I pick that. Oh and Blueprints was fun to listen to again during the bracket at the beginning of this year.
This is fascinating to me because I actually feel like this album was a pretty decent step up from the songwriting on NS. NS had a number of songs that I felt were way more forgettable and formulaic. My least favorite songs on DITW have more going for them than my least favorites on NS. Hell even To The Wolves, which I hate on constantly, has a promising verse/prechorus and could have been good if it wasnt for the weak chorus and bridge, which is more than I can say about songs like Retrace or Breathe. I guess in the end it all comes down to opinion. Those are just my thoughts.
I think NS is their second worst album and I don't think that's very good either but I still think it's a fair bit better than Dark. I feel like every song on Dark is forgettable and formulaic, most of them don't even sound finished to me. Like I think Breathe is one of their weakest slow songs and I still like it more than the majority of Dark.
I will say this: I think NS has several lower lows but I also think it has some higher highs. There aren't any songs on DITW that I like more than Feel Good Drag or Disappear haha. Also I think Miserable Visu is a better closer than Depraved. It's a shame those 3 songs were more the exception than the standard. Overall I still like DITW more.
