yeah just change the name of the fucking band Joey lol is your art speaking for itself or are we riding on name recognition
The song is just so good - my momma could sing it and I’d love it. But yeah - just stop the fugazi shit lol
There's an "air" to Stephen's timbre that isn't done much anymore that set Anberlin apart from their peers; Matty was an OG for his style of vocal delivery but it's been replicated so many times by many vocalists who jumped on that trend in the genre that it's just not a unique take anymore to hear...just my opinion
Anberlin should have came back off their hiatus with a new vocalist. instead they released two amazing EPs with Stephen (some of their best material imo). they toured a bunch AND then he bailed. It was weird timing with all of that. would people have been more open to that way? I think a lot of people are bummed because they got a taste of what could’ve been. And also the fact that Stephen is on 99% of their material
Stephen's timbre is why it made sense for them to cover "There is a light that never goes out". Couldn't imagine that cover being done with Matty.
This song is still too much of a banger even 20 years later to sound bad regardless of who's singing. But I can't see myself listening to an entire album of Matty re-recordings when Stephen's version still exists.
Hard agree. I usually mind my own bizz and never comment. It's just so funny reading all of these cheap negative reactions. It must be so easy for some people to sit on their phones, sipping latte's, eating their avocado toast living perfect lives, having no idea what it's like to be in a band. A band of their level is a legit business. These dudes have bills to pay just like everyone else. To rebrand and start a new band would put them back to beginning. And that means having no money to support their lives. These guys are probably just getting by with all the costs of tours these days. Replacing a singer is the HARDEST thing to do in music and I commend them. I guarantee beyond the surface they are so damn nervous about this change up. No one will ever know what it's like to be in a band of their magnitude and the tough choices they have to make.
Apparently, they are playing NTFP in full at Furnace Fest and Stephen is going to be the singer, so there's that.
I respect that, I think alot of the comments in this case in particular are based on, not so much the fact that they got a new singer but the way its presented, where Stephen is still kinda the singer but also kinda not the singer.
Probably doesn't pair well with lattes. But nah, I get it. Not liking the voice is totally a fair opinion. But for some people to tell them they should probably start a new band just shows how far removed they are from the business of being in a band, especially if its their only source as income. I mean, I'm sure they would have preferred to have kept Stephen as singer, but they had to pivot. The Fray are in the same boat. It's soooo hard to replace a singer. Might just be the hardest thing to do in all of entertainment.
I don't think anyone is telling them to start a new band just admit Matty is the new full time singer and move on.
I’ve said it before, but while I never would have liked it if Matty took over, I’d have a hell of a lot more respect for them if they’d just be clear and honest about what’s happening.
I feel like what they should have done was some form of, "We now have two singers, Matty will handle the brunt of it for now, Stephen will join us when he is able, and either/both may record on any new material going forward." Emery did something similar awhile back where Devon sort of didn't participate for awhile, and then occasionally, and then was back full time I believe. Granted they didn't have to hire a new singer, but still.
Whoops, so either I've vastly misunderstood what they're doing, or the communication has been very muddled. The implication I've gotten from the band is that Matty is replacing Stephen. It's just weird to be so confused about a band I've loved for so long.
