Looks like they’ll be releasing a full re-recording of the album with Matty on vocals. more Not all embedded content is displayed here. Was at the Austin show Friday and they threw some footage in from that one - pretty cool to see myself.
I don't hate Matty on vocals (I know a lot of people do) I just don't understand why they'd want to re-record old albums with him instead of creating something new.
I'm confused is he the new vocalist? I thought he as just helping out with some shows. This seems like a lead singer replacement?
What is Stephen's role in this band at this point? I last read he was still in the band for recording but not touring, whatever exactly that means. It feels like he didn't want to do it anymore but the other members wanted to continue so this was the solution? Great band, just a weird situation. I have no issues with Matty or the band, but I'd be much more excited to listen to new music from Matty and the guys from Anberlin if they just formed a new band with a new name. Not really into re-recordings of old songs or new songs by "Anberlin" with him singing.
This just sounds like all those generic white youtube dudes that have those "what if -band- was pop punk" videos.
Scathing read but as much as I loved Memphis May Fire back in the day... yeah sorry to Marty but that's what he eternally sounds like. Good singer for what he does, don't get me wrong, but there's zero personality and his voice just makes Anberlin sound much more generic than they do.
This is like dad rock for 40 year olds...which is me. But seriously, his voice sounds pretty close to the original.
This gets said a lot for these situations - if you are the guitarist of band who helped build a brand for the last 20+ years, would you really think it’d be a good idea to rebrand? You’d sell less merch, have smaller crowds, be lower on the billing for shows, have less people wanting to work with you, etc. It’d be too many blood, sweat and tears gone to waste. Just bc a lead singer left (or is being wishy washy like Stephen is), doesn’t mean the rest of the band should have to throw it all away. Especially when they’re trying to play/record music Anberlin fans should be able to come around to.
Seriously. These guys have full lives at this point, including loans, bills, kids, health care needs and saving for the future. Might as well tell someone to just try switching careers and see how it goes, because that’s basically what you’re asking a band member to do if they were to take a chance at throwing their established livelihood away—with no guarantee they could ever get it back— by starting a completely new band. You can’t just do that at a certain point in life, and these dudes are not just striking out in their teens/twenties.
It’s also an opportunity for them to own some NTFP masters outright instead of continuing to wait for the rights to revert from T&N/Capitol on the originals (which’ll presumably take another 15 years).
Eh, there's a timbre to Stephen's voice and some more nuanced pronunciation that stands out to me from a mile away.
