YES! So happy for them. Although I think their singer is still mega-Christian, I hope this opens up new doors for them sonically and audience wise. Can’t see much changing lyrically though, going from T&N to this, which honestly I’m fine with. The dude can write some damn good lyrics.
Not what I would call a “big stink”, but yeah, they were one of the bands from the scene who broke up and then somewhat promptly got back together. So many have done that now, I’m generally more surprised when bands actually stay broken up Haha
welcome back, anberlin. i can’t wait for some new music from these dudes. inevitable was my wife and i’s song for our first dance at our wedding.
I’m a leftist Christian. But we are a small sect compared to the lunacy that is otherwise populated in large order by “Christian” folks in the GOP who think Jesus talked about hatred, guns, trucks and money. My church believes Jesus was a brown refuge and acts accordingly with their message and resources. There are communities out there that believe this. Not many. Not enough. But it’s something.
According to a quick google search, in the 2020 election, 74 million people voted for Donald Trump. Meanwhile, there are 167 million Christians in America (to say nothing about the 2.38 billion Christians worldwide). Even if you said every Trump voter was a Christian (they aren’t, but for the sake of simplicity), there are more than 2 non Republican Christians for every Republican Christian in America. 2 to 1. And then something like 19 million more on top of that. To say nothing of the vast numbers outside of this country.
This is ignoring Christians who didn't vote. Just because they didn't vote doesn't mean they aren't Republican/Trump, and given the low voting turnouts, I think it's safe to assume that more than half of Christians are right leaning when you only need to add 10 million non voters to the number of people who voted for Trump to get there.
Really hope the new material is hook forward. I could not get into Lowborn at all but they can write some titanic earworm when firing.
Ahh I can see how my comment read like that. Of course not Haha I was talking more in the way of how when UO got resigned they let fly with the f-bombs and are very much not that same band from their Solid State days. Just pointing out that Anberlin will probably remain more consistent in that way is all.
I expected it from UO when they came back. It would not sound right coming from a band like Anberlin. They'll expand their sound, but I don't see explicit lyricism being something they'd explore.
You are speaking directly about white Evangelical christians, which Stephen absolutely is. But mainline denominations like Presbyterianism or Episcopalians are majority left or politically agnostic. But I digress! Right leaning biblical literalists are the absolute worst of the worst.
I'll get this thread back on track in a non-controversial way, "Adelaide" is the best Anberlin song ever made.
Also - super stoked for this. Equal Vision has always been one of my favorite labels, and they're evolving in a really cool way as they're bring on some of the stalwarts of the scene. Hot Water Music, As Cities Burn, Ryan Key. It's great.
I used to be pretty into Anberlin but evangelical christianity is gross and the extent to which Stephen has gotten into that world turns me off the to the band completely.
I couldn't find the interview, but IIRC, Stephen was the only one in the band with kids when they broke up and he wanted to do less touring to be home with them but everyone else in the band wanted to keep going full steam, which is probably why they seemed to talk about it as if the breakup was forever. Now 4 out of the 5 have kids, so after they reunited to play a show with Underoath, they were able to come to a better agreement as to what a touring schedule could look like for them.
Cool. Always appreciated that these dudes pushed forward with their sound. Dark is the Way and Vital still hold a special place in my heart.
Meh. If it doesn't come across in the lyrics then I really couldn't care. The extent to which Michael Jackson got into little kids turns me off but I'll still listen to Thriller occasionally.
