I really have faith they won't go overboard with the real life politics in this but we'll just need to wait and see. Evan Peters reaction when Trump won did make me chuckle though. Nice to see quite a few new faces too but I'm hoping we'll still see Lily Rabe and Denis O'Hare at some point.

Twisty has sold out big time. Comic books? Action figures?! In all seriousness I'm super glad we seem to be getting more of him. Did Ryan Murphy not say at one point there would be two Freak Show characters returning? I wonder who the other could be.

  4. The bigger a role Evan Peters gets (and also, conversely, the smaller a role Lena Dunham gets), the better.

Very excited. As much as I hate the politics in this country, I'm hoping the season doesn't go so overboard that it takes away from the story.

  8. Tonight! Doesn't feel quite the same as it did when all of our friends would come over and drink and watch it together in college, but the fiancee and I picked up some snacks and we're all set.

What the fuck was that? Like, that was really bad right? Allison Pill was great, and the rest of the season looks interesting, but this was so cringey bad

I think this review is pretty spot-on. If you can get past the typical cringe/trash of AHS, the way they're building towards cult of personality and psychological fear this season is pretty interesting imo. Idk, I have notriously trash tastes but I enjoyed the episode and the preview for the rest of the season looks fucking nuts

edit: not sure why that link won't post properly

  17. Nah you're good haha the episode was definitely shaky and divisive (much like every episode of this show ever), but I think the trash TV reputation this show has keeps some people from thinking about its more interesting aspects. In this episode, it's the idea of being targeted by your fears, questioning your mental health and the tension that can put on your relationships with other people

A big part of the problem I have with the episode is the way that Sarah Paulsons character was wrote. Growing up in a conservative town, her character felt like every shitty liberal joke I've ever heard my entire life.

I'm in for now, and I genuinely hope that they flesh her out, but at this point she feels like a charicature of what conservatives think a liberal is. It almost feels as though the show is coming from that right wing viewpoint I was raised in.

Also how the fuck are the bees gonna come into this? I think I might be judging it unfairly because the trailers actually looked scary with the clown cult and the weird bees everywhere. This was just cringey

  20. I think that's the point though - the show is starting just after election night, the night a lot of people were upset/disappointed with the results, but sort of forced to hope for the best. At the time, a lot of those people didn't fully grasp the consequences that would ensue in the coming months.

Her character feels like a caricature right now because none of the other characters fully grasp what she's so upset about - yet. Even other liberals (her therapist, her wife) are dismissing her reaction to the election as excessive. It's looking like Evan Peters' antagonist (as a local right-wing cult of personality, very much reflecting Trump) will be the reason these other characters finally realize the depth of the situation and understand Paulson's anxiety.

  21. Based on a few reviews, it seems a number of people think Paulson's exaggerated reactions are the point, but I really think it's the initial lack of reactions from other characters and how content they are to carry on that will come into play later. I could be wrong, but I think (and hope) the rest of the season tells that story.

  22. Agreed that this wasn't great but if they play their cards right it could turn into something very compelling. I've only loved Asylum and Hotel, so I'm not expecting this season to be amazing, or even above-average. It'll be funny if my favorites end up being 2, 5, and 8--every third season starting with 2--though.

The clowns are pretty fucking terrifying if you're afraid of clowns, which I am, so. But it's almost at that point where it ventures into fascination, like how I view the Slipknot masks.

I really hope they don't fuck up representing mental illness here.

Speaking of representation, of course a Ryan Murphy show kills off all the Asians the first chance it gets, again.

I'm firmly in the hope category as well, hopefully I'll look back on this premiere and see more in the character then I do now. I mean even just one or two scenes showing her as a stable, functioning human being before the election would have helped. Too much tell and not enough show for me

  24. I'm hoping they're doing that right now to throw us off and be neutral to appeal to the conservative crowd, like yeah Evan Peters is set up to be the bad guy, but look at how pathetic Sarah Paulson is. Ryan Murphy shows are usually relatively kind to LGBTQ characters (except when they're Asian). Liz Taylor was one of my favorite parts of Hotel. Hopefully this season treats mental illness with just as much respect.
