if there is already a related thread, forgive and direct me. otherwise i'm looking for some good albums to sleep to. i sleep every night with headphones in since my wife snores and it stresses me out. pretty much lately just basinki's disintegration loops, hammock, and max richter. what else should i be checking out?
Stars of the Lid is the obvious answer regardless of genre or intent, some of the most sublime and powerful music ever created besides that, well... there's a world out there: Eno's Music for Airports or Discreet Music are classics - leaning to the classical (and classic) side Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2 (composed while sleeping (lucid dreams!) for sleeping) Gas - Pop (for a beat) Biosphere - Substrata (a genre classic) Grouper is great for rainy evenings Susumu Yokota has very smooth stuff too Eluvium if you're into classical music Kevin Drumm - Imperial Distorion: a monument, an immense work of art - trance inducing (careful with the last track, it will wake you up); his noise shit is epic too Kyle Bobby Dunn for some Stars of the Lid worship and then there's the dronier/noisy side of things, don't know if you can sleep to this but I can Tim Hecker - Harmony In Ultraviolet is my fav from him Birchville Cat Motel - Beautiful Speck Triumph: his masterpiece - it drones and clacks and hisses but it is also beautiful Yellow Swans - Going Places: noise-ambient monster Belong - October Language: power ambient? kind of a more straight up Tim Hecker Ian William Craig - my favorite artist working today, regardless of genre - check everything, but A Turn of Breath is the best album I've heard in a long minute - looping of voices and drones, beautiful Rafael Anton Irisarri & there's also Max Richter's Sleep, which is an 8 hr composition designed for sleeping - not really ambient, but really good for listening intently or sleeping there's so much stuff out there - tell me what you like and I can point you in the right direction EDIT because my spelling sucks
thanks, i've been listening to sleep since it came out and it's absolutely unreal. also really liked gas's pop (forgot about that one). never liked stars of the lid but maybe i'll give it another try. definitely a lot of stuff here to check out. much appreciated
the last two SotL albums are in my top 10 works of art ever - do try getting into them, I swear they will heal your soul, when needed I love all things ambient/noise/drone, so feel free to ask whatever, I love talking about it finally, catch Basinski live if you get the chance - seriously deep
Jacaszek - Treny Deaf Center - Pale Ravine Leyland James Kirby - Sadly, the Future Is No Longer What It Was The Caretaker - An Empty Bliss Beyond This World
im such an asshole for not mentioning this album. this is one of the greatest albums of all time. absolutely haunting
Great suggestions in here. The Caretaker, Gas, Stars of the Lid, Hecker . . . All some of my favorite albums ever. Will definitely follow up on everything else posted.
Nothing too wild. Likely just the artwork for And Their Refinement...I'm meeting with an artist on Thursday to talk about it.
you can stream the new Ian William Craig @ Rolling Stone (wtf) Hear Ian William Craig's Gorgeous Decaying-Tape Symphony 'Centres' | Rolling Stone album of the year?
I think you ambient kids might be interested in this: The Quietus | News | LISTEN: New Set Fire To Flames
I've never heard of this guy but the first song on here is so good even if I wouldn't really call it ambient.
ambient, drone, noise, tape-looping... all those genres are very closely related but yeah, IWC blowing minds yet again - easily my favorite active artists right now
yeah no after track one it definitely sounds way more like what i expected and it's incredible so thank you. ugh I'm gonna have to go through this guy's disco.
