I like Heroes off Dirty Work quite a bit

Don't Panic is pretty easily my favorite album by them

The only other one that's strong all the way through imo is SWIR. The second half of Nothing Personal isn't great, there's only a few songs I like on Dirty Work, and Future Hearts could stand to lose a few songs. I still like them a lot though and their shows are always super fun

  3. I don't think they have a bad album, the only one that isn't strong all the way through is probably Dirty Work. My favorite is probably Don't Panic. The full "It's Longer Now" totally jams from start to finish.

This new album might be the first thing I've enjoyed from them since So Wrong Its Right. Future Hearts wasn't terrible.

But dang...Alex sounds great on these new tracks.

Really looking forward to this album, as we're nearing the release day. I'm mostly itching to hear all the songs they released thus far in context, to see how the album flows and gels together. I've liked each one in isolation but without the larger whole it's personally been hard to get a feel for what they're going for overall on it.

ATL is one of my favorite bands. DW is the only album by them I don't really like much, but it's been a while since I really sat & listened to the whole thing. My favorite is either NP or SWIR.

  7. Last time I listened to Dirty Work was some time last year and the stand-out low point of the album was without a doubt "That Girl." "I Feel Like Dancing" is stupid and corny but "That Girl" is straight up horrible with god awful lyrics.

Idk, I've never cringed harder in my life at a band I enjoy than the first time I heard "I Feel Like Dancin'" haha. Song is just so awkward and feels like it was written by a 40-year-old desperately trying to sound "hip."

    Oh, wait...

I like That Girl a lot musically. Something about it works for me even though the lyrics are blah

I Feel Like Dancin' isn't good but it's pretty harmless, just more of a throwaway track

It's a decent pop rock single but its such an outlier from their sound I can understand the backlash. Sounds like a Hot Chelle Rae song. I can understand why the label pushed that song for a first single, but it does not sound like anything else on Dirty Work which gets way too much flak than it deserves.

The main issue I have with it is that it's just vapid; like you said, it makes sense to push more of a pop song, but that song is just half assed as a pop single. It doesn't have anything particularly interesting going on and it's really not even one of their catchier songs.

  13. Gotta say I find the song catchy as hell and still laugh at "drugs and candy" being a line in a song. Reminds me of singing along to "sex and candy" as a younger lad.

I mean I always took it as a tongue-in-cheek send up of those kinds of songs. The fact that it's cowritten with Rivers always solidified that in my mind.

Though I swear to god there was an article in between Nothing Personal and Dirty Work where Alex said they were going to go for a rawer, less polished sound which was the polar opposite of what actually happened. @Jason Tate any clue what happened with that? Not that I minded that much but I figured it was part of the reason why fans fell off on that record.

I could've sworn they had said there was going to be an intro track called "Art of the State" to "Do You Want Me (Dead?)", in fact, they actually streamed it somewhere. Didn't end up on the album though. I thought that would've been a nice touch.

Of course, I'm speculating here, but I always thought Interscope was probably way too involved in the creative process for that album, and that would explain why the record as a whole feels lower on the energy and personality. Even the band at one point said they had a "too many cooks in the kitchen" problem in the writing process.

  17. I Feel Like Dancing would make soooooo much more sense as a Weezer song. Not that it'd be good, but it'd make more sense as a Hurley-era Weezer track.

The two of you posting right after the other really threw me off. And @FTank I remember that song as well. That and Actors should have made it on the album.

Hahaha. Yeah, I agree, Actors was one of the better songs from that era.

There's not much on Dirty Work I enjoyed and return to for that matter. I Feel Like Dancin' and Time Bomb never really worked for me. I always thought the catchiest song on that record was That Girl. It reminded me of some of the upbeat pop songs of that time period.

His ringtone in the beginning of this video is definitely "Life of the Party". Pretty cool
