Psychedelic rock? Psychedelic soul? Psychedelic funk? The word is starting to lose all meaning! You like it and find it hard to define its genre? Let’s talk about it here!
psych bluesy stuff from 60s-70s is my favorite “genre” some great modern bands doing it. black angels come to mind.
I was listening to The Temptations' Cloud Nine in the car today, and psychedelic soul is barely psychedelic, but it's real fuckin' good. SO many bongos. SO much wah-wah.
Khruangbin are bloody great. There's a Brazilian band called Boogarins who are kinda similar, really cool stuff.
what's everyone's fav psych records? I feel like I'm mostly familiar to the tag via indie/rock bands and folk but I'd love to expand my understanding of it more. recently listened to a 13 Elevators record after Roky Erickson died and that was pretty cool though I definitely need to give it way more time
That record opened me up to more of the San Francisco ballroom scene. I'd also humbly submit Forever Changes
Was watching the Boiler Room stream for the UK release party for Freddie Gibbs and Madlibs latest. Egon, president of Now-Again, was djing beforehand as was playing a shit tonne of 60's UK Psych. Best part about it was the camera panning round all the hip hop heads in the room that couldn't make sense of it. A few tried to have a dance, but it was mostly met with confusion. Tickled me, it did.
Been listening to Dr John's first 4 albums recently, discussion of which definitely belongs in this thread. I know he changed up his style after a while, but I really dig his early stuff, especially his first 2.
New album by The Heliocentrics is pretty damn good. Out on Madlib's Invazion label. It's actually my first proper listen of them and it definitely wont be my last! It could also be included on the jazz thread, on the soul thread or even the instrumental hip hop thread. Thought putting it here covered all bases haha
Figured we could start posting things in here that sit on the stoner/Proto Metal side of things. This came out Friday and is just great blues rock: Can’t hate on the Cream cover either.
