"Get My Cut" is my least favorite, though that's at least in part due to having the video with the dialogue in the intro rather than a straight audio version in the stream. "Whatever" is my favorite, and "Home" is great, especially following the opener.
I didn't get the whole "Andy hull" clone thing as much as I thought.... Andy was doing some of his classic third harmonies on this and I think some of them are definitely Andy in get my cut. But I think this album is fantastic but need way more time with it.
Fuck, wow I'm behind haha. Was listening to Jimmy all day yesterday, had no idea this was out there. Glad the few reactions I was willing to read seemed positive!
I just realized this was the last album I was excited for this year :( it did not disappoint, but its gonna be a long wait for some new material. Hopefully I'll find some stuff on the EOTY lists.
Same here! But I'm kind of glad about that, because it will give me the rest of the year to spend time with my favorites, let them really soak, and anything else I hear that is new will be an unexpected discovery. I had to google what QFT means. Haha.
Also, my second playthrough of this was kinder than my first. It might just be the case that it's a grower and as I put more time into it, I'll reap more rewards.
Like, this feels like an album that should be very important to the scene canon. An off kilter masterpiece in the same vein as RFTS or METN. Idk I'm definitely being hyperbolic and it's probably just a right place at the right time thing, but this has really blown me away
I think the placement of Get My Cut immediately following Empty Nest is really effective. Empty Nest feels like the emotional climax of the album, and the centerpiece, and having a song like Get My Cut that is more upbeat and poppy brings me back from the hit Empty Nest lays on me.
its probably behind goodness and thrice for me but serious contender for the number three spot on my list ha
I think I probably like this more than any Manchester Orchestra record, maybe Mean Everything is on the same level like you said also I need to see if this has the staying power that the Manchester record holds... does anyone know if they are on the same level live that Manchester is? I'm seeing them in a few weeks in Philly very excited to see how their sound translates, hope he plays a ton from this and movement
Never heard them before but they sound like a bunch of my favorites mixed together! Can't wait to dig into them now thanks!
I know I'm a little biased but in the 8ish years I've seen them live, they've always blown away my expectations.
They surpassed MO the first time I saw them for me. First openers on what I believe was a 5 band bill headlined by MO in late 08 and had the whole place dead quiet during that part of Let Me Go. That was it for me. Having said that, the band is completely different now, member-wise, so who knows how the new shit will translate, haha
