    Sounds about right!

Matt associates with some Nazis and abusers. I think we can all agree on that.

(And honestly I don’t think that what’s in question since it’s a fact).

Longer than that, he put Douglas Pearce on Agony & Irony in 2007.

Yeah back then I had no clue who that dude even was, just thought it was some guy. He’s even credited as “Douglas P.” so they didn’t even use his full name. Didn’t find out who he really was until the last couple years.

Yeah I was just trying to go off social media postings, I feel like it was that 2015ish range when he started posting some weird books and imagery and etc, but I could definitely be off. I just tried going through his IG to see but dude posts so goddamn much it’s impossible to scroll back that far unless you wanna waste an hour doing it. Thought I saw a Nazi thing from a few months ago tho and then I realized that I think it’s supposed to be Norwegian so lol

i know the quality of the artist in these kinds things doesn’t matter at all but it’s wild to me people are going to bat for matt skiba over being a nazi so much

my favorite musician is david bowie, someone who has in photos done some pretty antisemitic stuff that’s gross in the past. granted, it was a different time and he was completely fucked off cocaine, but it still fucking sucks and makes it tough for me. he’s also released a handful of the most important albums ever. skiba has barely released important music within his own shitty genre. wild.

Sorry but that take is absolutely not it. I love Skiba's work and think he is a really good songwriter, but that also does not matter to me anymore. I had a big emotional connection to this band. I'm no longer supporting them and unless Matt does some self reflecting and changes for the better, I'm certainly not going to give them another listen. Music quality is 100% subjective and personal.

I keep thinking about how in general just fucking stupid this is, or how dumb you'd have to be to actually type and post this while defending the nazi from blink

Honestly, talking about how your problematic favorite is a better problematic favorite than other people's really bothers me. Men seem to do this sort of thing a lot and it makes me want to leave this site and never come back.

Music may be "subjective", but not all musical opinions deserve to be respected equally.

Pop punk fans really don't know their place in the musical canon. Now, with that said, I think phaynes12 is being a bit too harsh on Alkaline Trio. Their artistic reputation was always seen as darker, more serious and more respected than your run of the mill pop punk bands. People like me became fans of Alkaline Trio because we knew it made ourselves look better and more elite than Blink-182, Good Charlotte and New Found Glory fans. It boosted our image.

Now, of course I haven't listened to pop punk in over a decade because I'm too old for that shit now. When I look back I still think of Alk3 as one of the better bands in a musical scene that will always carry about a bad reputation due to immaturity and overall negative image by tastemakers.

You are straight up delusional if you think that Alkaline Trio even sniff David Bowie's shoes in the music canon. Obviously the two deserve to be treated differently. And Bowie very infamously took the virginity of a 14 year old aside from his fascism phase, and rightfully none of that has phased his image at all – because he is just that musically important. Alkaline Trio are serious for a pop punk band, but that only takes you so far in this world. They're not even close to the critical acclaim level of Brand New, who at least earned Best New Music and Best New Track twice from Pitchfork and have The Devil and God... rated among the top albums OF ALL TIME on nearly every big music rating website, whether it be RYM, AlbumOfTheYear, or SputnikMusic, had a #1 album on Billboard to further back up the widespread reach of their acclaimed music, and are seen more as an indie rock band than a "scene" band.

Pop punk fans just don't know their place.

And keeping in line with the thread, Skiba's flirtation with Nazi imagery is very bad. Skiba should definitely stop that crap, I don't care if it's for "edginess" or "shock", please cut it out Matt. Very unacceptable behavior.

That was the most condescending bullshit I've ever read. I'm a grown woman and I still listen to plenty of pop punk made by decent people that are also pretty good musicians. Many of them also being women and men of color. I listen to all sorts of music but I guess I should learn my place, right? Fuck you and fuck matt skiba.

Ok, so I'm kinda stoned so if this is weird forgive me, but since seeing Anthony post this song I've had something bouncing around in my head.

The short history of this song is that the early punk scenes in the UK and US "flirted with" (ugh) nazi imagery. The reasons they did so are out there if you wanna look em up. So by the time of the Dead Kennedy's (who I believe flirted with it too) Nazis were just outwardly showing up to punk shows. Recruiting. Starting fights. Then as kids who didn't wanna deal with that shit stopped coming, the Nazis started rising in the ratio of show attendees, which is not good. Hence, "Nazi punks fuck off". There can be no tolerance for nazi shit in the scene, because the Nazis see that shit, and act on it.

That's what's wrong with what Skiba is doing. It doesn't matter if he's "flirting with" Nazi imagery or whatever you wanna say, that shit needs to be snuffed out aggressively, because what some people may play up as just flirtation among contrarians or whatever the fuck, that flirtation is seen as an invitation by nazis. Nazis can fuck off, no space for *any* of that hatred in the scene.
