Happy to see A&I get defended by someone besides me. That album is awesome and it would be a serious contender for #1 for me if it didn't have Live Young on it, which is a really bad song IMO haha. Also felt the closer was weak, more on that later..

But Dan was top notch on that album, and I always include the b-sides in any album ranking and A&I probably has the best b-sides of any album they've done. But an all-Dan album consisting of In Vein, Do You Wanna Know?, Love Love Kiss Kiss, Ruin It, Burned is the House, and In My Stomach combined with 4-5 of his other best songs would probably be the best overall Trio album if it existed lol. Wouldn't flow at all but just on song writing alone.

And Matt was pretty damn good too. His lyrics were getting a little repetitive theme wise but the hooks were really catchy and good. Live Young was a big misstep IMO, and Into The Night was an okay song, it just shouldn't have been the closer. I know it's cliche to close on a slower song but Into the Night would have been a perfect penultimate song to In My Stomach closing out the album.

If we count Alkaline Trio and Remains I'd probably put the former between Maybe I'll Catch Fire and Goddamnit, and the latter between Good Mourning and Crimson.

 

A&I is solid

 

Good Mourning is easily their best album though, sorry everyone with other thoughts

Unfortunately Crimson is their best release, sorry to disappoint folks.

 

Aside from ‘Radio’...’Smoke’ is my favorite album closer from these guys.

PRetty sure i posted this like 5 pages ago or whenver we last talked about it haha, but Crimson was SUPER high on my rankings when it first came out but then I kind of got sick of it the more I listened to it. Not that I think it's bad now but I still put, at minimum, Good Mourning, A&I, MSIT, FTHI and possibly ITTC? above it.

 

I didn’t include Remains or the self-titled compliation in my ranking, but they’re both basically flawless to me. Remains is a treasure trove.

 

Since someone mentioned Smoke, shall we rank the closers?

I know I know, blasphemy to have Radio that low...but I'm always Dan partial, and Blue In the Face is the fucking perfect closer to their best album. That song is everything that is great about Good Mourning.

Man I knew I didn't like Into the Night as a closer but I didn't realize so many people agreed with me haha.

It is a fine song....just shouldn't be a closer.

 

I think Into The Night is a weak song imo.
