So, on my drive to the store this morning, I decided to throw on Babylon. Such a solid, solid rock record.
I forgot I already know a good portion of these Remains songs. The HWM split, Jaked on Green Beers, One Man Army split, Warbrain, and some of the B-sides that appeared on singles. That's probably why this thing falls under the radar. Great compilation of all of those forgotten songs.
Was always hoping we'd get a recorded version after they played that as an intro to a Trio show years ago. One of my favorite Matt songs period.
Well yeah. I just mean when that clip popped up on Youtube, I always hoped we'd get a proper version of it someday and we did haha.
Man, Warbrain is an awesome song. Listening through Remains reminds me how much better some extra Trio songs are than a lot of band's actual album material. Let's fucking go. Alkaline Trio 2K17! I'm ready.
Yeah I'm pretty sure that song was recorded around the same time as FHTI...might ahve been from the same sessions actually. It sounds much more like "older trio" than FHTI does which is crazy if it was part of the same session hah
I'm 99% sure Hell Yes was the bonus track on the UK copy of FHTI. Probably wrong, but I think I have it on my copy of that album...
I love this quote from Dan in the Remains booklet about Dead End Road: "the fine people at Vagrant were really stoked about a song called "Stupid Kid" that they thought could be a "huge hit." So we ended up bumping this song for that one, and now we are millionaires who use our platinum records for dinner plates." Haha
That's what I figured, I should have known better because Mike and Derek both have distinct sounds aha.
Hahahaha I remember reading that in the notes. TBF I think Stupid Kid could have been a bigger hit if it were marketed right. It did seem to get some decent air on MTV2 back in the day. We've Had Enough got waaaaaay more play though when it came out. Yeah it's kinda crazy that all 3 of the drummers they've had have very distinct drumming sounds haha...Derek is a good mixture of Glen's crazyness and Mike's tightness.
Yeah by no means was it a flop. And it's pretty rare to see a top ten pop-punk record list without FHTI on it. Idk if it could've done more. They definitely aren't a band for everybody. But from FHTI through Crimson they definitely had a bit of a nice mainstream prescence, videos and late night shows and whatnot.
They're doing three nights at the Metro in Chicago, god damn. I'm seeing Ben Gibbard and Julien Baker the last two nights, but thankfully I'll be free for the first show so hopefully I can snag a ticket. Their Riot Fest aftershow in 2015 converted me into a die-hard fan, would love to see them again.
