I'm sort of willing to let that slide, but again, it comes back to preparation and presentation for me. At some point correct the problem. NFG, MCS, the Bouncing Souls off the top of my head have done something similar and never used one. Heck, I was at a NYE show for the Suicide Machines and Jay (who plays in at least four somewhat active bands I can think of) is taking requests for songs he hasn't played in over ten years in some cases. It comes across as lazy to me and not really taking it seriously. I guess one could argue the other way as well that he wants to hit every lyric. Again, I am totally cool with forgetting lyrics. I'm not expecting perfection when I attend a show. I've seen guys like Brian Fallon and many others screw up. I'm sure there are other older legacy acts doing something like this too, but I don't like it. Punk rock was never meant to be perfect or else it would have just been classic rock from the jump.

  2. i've been listening to Blink-182 for over half my life and still don't know every lyric of theirs. like, i bet there's more songs that i don't know all the lyrics to.

the older Matt gets, the more songs he's writing and having to remember, so i'm sure it's getting harder to remember everything. i don't blame him one bit for forgetting lyrics. the dude has a million songs.

One word I've never once ever used to describe Skiba is lazy...

I said using a teleprompter comes across as lazy. I am not saying he is lazy. I don't really want to argue semantics. We have differing views on the teleprompter and that's fine with me. Something we can all agree on is that it's cool the band played some shows again and switched up the sets a bit.

  5. NFG and the Souls are a poor example seeing as both bands play deep cuts and what not on regular tours. Trio on the other hand, when they did those songs for past live were either never played in a live setting before or haven't played in years.

I nean the guy is human. I don't think he's the greatest musician ever. I don't think he's playing the toughest songs ever. There's lots of more musically talented people that do what he does that would never need a prompter. I get that. But the guy's also human lol. I don't know if performing wise he got messed up after that Sekrets debacle. Idk if he has anxiety or something else going on. He has written a ton of songs but that still wouldn't be an issue for a ton of musicians. If he needs a prompter, I'd rather see him play and do what he needs to do to get through than think he needs to stop performing. I really doubt laziness is part of the equation here.

    !

    what was the Sekrets debacle?

  8. I just think him and Dan are just two different personalities that handle things differently. But, also two different personalities that gel great.

His first show with the Sekrets was a disaster. Mumbling, forgetting lyrics, barely able to stand from what I remember. I believe he mixed pills and booze. He got clean after that.

I think that show happened in Cleveland, I remember I was supposed to go and something came up

  12. I believe it was all from a broken heart too, and it led to him writing about it on My shame.

I think the Cleveland show must have been a disaster as well then

I think the Cleveland show was right around that incident, but it wasn't the actual one in the video. I think he played the Grog Shop for that tour.

  16. Funny thing is he decided to make up shows for the fans that he skipped because of the debacle and played for free in Chicago, that's when he started reading lyrics when he played.

Yeah, the first Sekrets show was in Chicago at the Metro. I was there for it, and it was really hard to watch.

I saw Alkaline Trio play at Riot Fest three months later, and Matt was much better then.

I missed that free make up show, and I still regret it.

  20. And I felt awful when I saw video from that show. I think it stems from the fact he always seemed like a great guy with a big heart.

Yeah I was gonna post it to reply to the question but when I looked it up I didn't even want to watch it. It was a shitty time for him and it wasn't some dumb "rock star doesn't give a shit" thing at all

I also remember something similar happened shortly before that show when he came out to play with Chuck Ragan at a Revival Tour date. I remember Chuck tweeting something about Matt needing help. Also, can we get Chuck on a new Trio song please?

I mean...I was at the show on NYE and Matt didn’t seem to be lazy or forgetful. Also didn’t see and teleprompter. He actually seemed pretty on top of it. He got more into it as the night went on and the crowd got more into it. It was a fun show.

Derek was so fun to watch.

Yeah I watched most of it on a FB video. Seemed no different than most Trio shows I've been to
