    so this was excellent.

i'm in the pro-hybrid camp here. the design looked better than the one in Resurrection, and felt almost Engineer-like. this movie really did have something for every Alien fan.

The guy that played Andy absolutely stole the movie. Put him in everything.

Yeah, he was excellent. And obviously Cailee was great. I was expecting more of a game changer of a climax with how people were saying it was. Overall, pretty much the “Alien” structure with some modern flair and, hey, that worked with “Prey” and it works here too. Had a great time. What a thrill.

I’ll also echo that I could have lived without Ash being the android. Much like Tarkin in “Rogue One” - it’s just too uncanny valley. He had what I call “video game teeth,” where you can just tell that thing is a computer creation by looking at them digital chompers. Didn’t totally affect my enjoyment of the movie because that character is the Michael Jordan of being a son of a bitch. But it could have been another model of android with the same company man directive and I don’t think anything would have been lost.
Besides that - Everything was really well done, especially the gravity scene. The first 15 minutes alone - It felt so good to have a space movie that actually felt tangible and real, after watching so much Netflix space garbage where they cut corners with bad green screens or bland-looking soundstages. Fede really came through on this.

People keep liking this post and so I want to say the more I look at it, the more this is haunting me.

Particularly the "yours what" part, because I don't know any sentence where anything would come after "yours".

I'm sorry for the way that I am.

  12. Lol. This was pretty good, occasionally great, and almost always fun. I have a few gripes I have to get out of the way before I get into what I loved.

    1. I really, really wish Andy didn't say the line from Aliens. Probably more of a personal thing, but this otherwise handled fan service really well and that took me out for a minute.

    2. As a fan of both Alien and Alvarez, I don't have any problems with that third act reveal, but I do think it feels like it's almost pulled from a separate movie. 2/3 typical Alien film followed by 1/3 typical Alvarez shit, both of which are complimentary, but I wish the tone of the ending was splashed throughout the rest of the film a little more. I think the xeno-human hybrid design in Resurrection was better. Hard to rag on the VFX when this movie had so many incredible practical effects, but digital effects also felt a little at odds with the rest of the film to me.

    3. Again, as someone who enjoyed this movie and the ending for what it was, I gotta say...if you think the story here is more interesting than the world-building Scott was doing in Prometheus and Covenant, you're outta your fucking mind lol

All that being said, yeah, this is better than the "greatest hits reel" comparisons I've seen because scenes like silent facehugger room and the zero gravity xenomorph sequence are totally new to the franchise and kick so much ass. Pretty much everyone shows up to work here. Alvarez has some great camerawork and while I wish there was a little more depth to a couple of the characters, most of the performances are very good if not great. Loved that they kept the retro-futurism in the computer screens and such, love that the colony looked straight out of Blade Runner, and the space visuals (particularly the rings) were absolutely gorgeous. I also think, with the exception of that one moment I mentioned above, this paid just enough respect to the films that came before it (like the intro sequence and some of the score) without treating the audience like babies.

Good movie. I don't like it as much as Scott's or Cameron's (and I have a soft spot for AVP), but it's certainly better than 3, Resurrection, and AVP Requiem. Feels very comparable to Evil Dead Rise to me in more ways than one.

  13. @Serh and I seem to be on pretty similar wavelengths with this one based on his post.

Weirdly enough, my theater was pretty empty.

in fairness, there was a dude in front of me on his phone every few minutes running on a half hour or more

this certainly isn't a bad film or whatever, i mostly just wish the bulk of the whole thing was on par with its best moments. certainly glad others are digging it more

I really enjoyed this. The xenomorphs were actually creepy for the first time since pre-AVP. I liked the story and the group of people. The last 10 minutes I didn’t like at all though. Without that it would have been a 4 1/2 out of 5, but with the last 10 minutes I’ll give it a 4/5.

Yeah this was an absolute blast. Had so so much fun with this one, which is something the self-serious Ridley films were lacking. And I’m pro-human hybrid. It was basically telegraphed once she revealed she was pregnant and you’re just waiting for it to come the whole movie. Loved that it echoed the pregnancy in Covenant(?)and even cooler, looked like an Engineer. However, I do have gripes with it, namely the Andy moment @Aaron Mook stated, and some of the stupid ass pauses that kept happening during critical moments, which is a feature of non-“elevated” horror. Just makes me think that Alvarez misses a key element of what makes the originals so incredible. Overall on par or slightly ahead of the Ridley prequels

oh! And loved the score, music was so so good

Have we ever seen that mid way cocoon that it made after it became a chest buster? That was crazy and the death of the loser that followed it was well deserved

For me, one of the coolest shots is near the end, where we see from the outside the escape ship I think auto-powers down, and in the distance you can see the research station plowing into the ice ring….incredible stuff

We don’t need to spoiler-tag anymore, right?

The hybrid harkened back to the Engineers, and this is because, I assume, the woman took the black goo? The baby cocoon seemed waaay bigger than what would have realistically fit inside her body, but alas, haha. And that black goo they “created” in the lab; is it the same stuff David created/had in Prometheus?
