I really enjoyed the film, it's easily the best in the franchise since Alien 3 (which is not saying much, but y'know). The action scenes are fantastic, I had a huge grin on my face the entire time while watching it. Yeah, it's pretty predictable, there are some holes, and if you're looking for something new or different you're probably not going to find it here. It's another Alien movie - for those of us who've enjoyed every film in the franchise, that's probably enough; for those who've hated everything since Aliens, this isn't going to win you back, but I don't know if anything could at this point.
My fiancé is flaking on me for Friday night. She's apparently getting her hair done, idk something about us getting married next month. Gonna take my dad Sat morning which is probably better anyways since everyone is saying how bloody it is. Plus him getting me into the franchise.
Was supposed to watch this tonight but I don't think I'll be able to. Bummed. Not sure when I'll be able to watch this. After finals, I guess.
Tonight!! I re-watched the original last night for the first time in foreeeevver. The set design & lighting is so, so incredible for a movie from 1979 especially.
Is the CGI still as rough as it is in the trailer? Was hoping they would put some more time into it before release. I can not be afraid of a bad CGI monster or villain.
Compared to the old practical alien, the CGI version looks cartoonish to me, which, in turn, makes it way less scary and menacing.
Just based on the clips/trailers I've seen, it seems like it's more like Aliens in terms of action as oppose to the original as a claustrophobic thriller. Is this correct? For the record I prefer Aliens over Alien
Also I enjoyed this. Like other criticisms have said, it's not very original...at all. But it's a good bridge between Prometheus and the first Alien. I really wish they went practical Xeno instead of CGI as well.
So: (slightly spoiler-y takes ahead) The CGI Xeno was terribly un-scary. My friend who saw this with me who has never seen Alien, Aliens, etc. was reasonably scared by it though, so I'm guessing that has to do with practical v CGI. The neomorph, however was fucking terrifying to me. Not only were the backburster sequences truly stomach turning, but the way the damn thing moved was unholy. The scene with David and the Neomorph was the very definition of captivating. I saw that final twist coming three miles away, but the "gods entering valhalla" sequence has to go down as some of fassbender's best work. And finally: Shower scene would have gone over WAY better if it wasn't in the trailers.Execution-wise it was everything you'd want from that scene (especially as it was previously described as an idea for the OG movie) but knowing exactly what was going to happen and how ruined the moment for me. alright, I'm done. EDIT: (added another thing)
Yeah, this was kind of a strange one, but I had a blast. I've read so many takes on this being an "apology" for Prometheus but I think that's horseshit. As someone who enjoys that movie, I really do admire Scott's newfound commitment to creating a mythology in this universe and I felt this successfully blended that aspect of Prometheus with some of the classic action sequences and terror of Aliens and Alien, respectively. The mood of the film changed often and that was a bit jarring, like patchwork (especially early on), but the amount of tension and suspense built in the first half of the film certainly pays off. The second half was terrific and Fassbender's mad scientist performance was absolutely mesmerizing. Also though McBride and Waterston were strong in their roles. As a fan of the series, I don't really have any solid complaints. This was good, fun, consistently interesting and genuinely frightening, even if it doesn't reach the heights of the original film. I'm very happy that the film we got seems to truly reflect Scott's vision rather than any amount of fan service he could have churned out in its place.
Pretty much feel about this the exact same way I felt about Prometheus. Meh. Enjoyable in some ways, mildly infuriating in others.
Just saw it, it was fine. Not great but much, much better than Prometheus. This one actually had characters to like and a script that didn't shortchange the talented cast they brought together. Biggest gripe was the excessive shaky cam during some of the fight scenes, and also the CGI xenomorphs could have been better. The ending was also pretty heavily telegraphed and obvious, but overall, again, I was cool with it.
Yep, I would say it's "fine" too. Maybe a 6/10. The plot was pretty standard and I was hoping for more substance from Ridley Scott. I didn't like the cast, aside from Michael Fassbender. Danny McBride could have been used more comedically, ala John C. Reilly in Kong. Also, Katherine Waterston is not a leading actress, at least not yet. I never saw Fantastic Beasts, but from what I remember of Steve Jobs, she was meh there too.
I was pretty let down. The characters are all super dumb, it focuses way too much on David and not the aliens [/spoilers] and the ending felt tacked on The way they kill off the Xenomorph on the ship is just so rushed and the plan works way too well. There was no tension at all. Also, the "twist" is so fucking predictable it's absurd. I don't know if it's fair to even call it a twist. It felt like the set up with David was meant to be deceiving but then they made zero effort to actually hide it, so weird. [/spoilers]
Agreed with the criticisms here. This thing is all over the place tonally. Did you like Prometheus? Great! Did you hate Prometheus? Great! Were you hoping for some actual answers? Great! Were you hoping to be just as frustrated about getting some answers as you were with Prometheus if you didn't like Prometheus? You know...great! It looks nice and all and the action scenes are suspenseful I guess, but...who are these people? Why do I care? The longer it sits with me, the less enamored I am with it. This thing is surprisingly filled with every horror trope in the book and it's like they didn't even bother. "I'm going for a walk" (AND I'M NEVER COMING BACK) "I also am going for the same walk." Again and again.
really wanted to this to end with david making the traditional xenomorph by making an alien from walter, that would be a really interesting
Shaw and David with the Engineers was what people wanted to see. That was the whole reason Prometheus could have been interesting, but they make the brief appearance. What a waste.
I really enjoyed this as a whole. The twist following the David/Walter fight was very obvious to the viewer which made it that much more heartbreaking to Daniels at the end. The CGI Xeno did not bother me that much, but the Neomorphs were definitely more terrifying in their execution. That "long grass" scene ala The Lost World was intense to watch. I understand the importance of having the flute scene for David's motivations, but something seemed off about the whole thing. Very awkward at times. I wish they could have explored more of the mythology of the engineers. Prometheus pulled me in with that idea of finding your creator and to have David come in and basically murder them in the manner he did was a letdown. Shaw's fate of course sucked :/ Packed theater for me and I loved the tension that the movie provided for the audience. Nothing's ever made me ever want to look away from something (not as in they're shitty movies lol)as the Alien franchise and I commend them for that.
I saw this twice already. I enjoyed it a lot as an Alien fan but as a fan of film in general I totally understand most of the criticisms in this thread. my fourth favorite alien film after OG Alien, AlienS, and Prometheus. Fassbender was great blah blah blah what else is new. I like that fact that David has created the xeno instead of the engineers, which was a theory regarding the original script of Prometheus back when it was titled Alien: Engineers or something. But now they gotta explain this shit: along with the pile of dead engineers with holes in their chests
