It was my least favorite on first listen, but it has grown a ton. Love the lyrics and just the really soft and quiet approach of it.
I'm on the last song now at my first listen - it rips! Just sent it to my brother who possibly wished for something heavier out of new AOF. I'm satisfied with both! I'd say like a lot!
Saw them last thursday in boston for the first time ever and forgot to post about it but they blew me the fuck away. George's stage presence was the unexpected highlight for me, dude ended up breaking two mic stands haha. Whole band was in the zone the whole set honestly. Also very pumped I got to hear both Old Crows and Young Cardinals in the same set since I just got matching Crow/Cardinal tattoos a few months back. Loved Wade throwing in the Neil Young lyrics at the end of Kilowatt.
Would love to have a chance to hear that version of Kilowatt! And high five for the tattoo, as I also had the cardinal done almost 13 years ago and was supposed to add the crow on my second leg for it's 10th anniversary, but time passed too fast hahah - my old tattoo artist was kinda slow with my e-mails and I essentially forgot! I'm in a need for a small touch up for that old one for sure, it was my first tattoo, so I might take care of both then.
Was awesome as some one who loves both AOF and Neil! Also I'm always gonna encourage people to go for it and get the dang tattoo. A crow to match will look great with the one you have I bet, based on how mine turned out I got both of mine in one go which was definitely way easier to sit through than I'd expected. Im always so nervous when I sit for tattoos but my artist was speedy and we got it done in less than 3 hrs. here is how mine came out, though I do need to go back and get some of the clouds retouched now that its a few months healed:
Do they still do the thing where they'll give you a free ticket to the show if you have an AOF tattoo?
This one looks amazing! and very fast to have it done in 3h, wow! Mine is much smaller and just the same as the Paul Jackson painting from the original artwork, all in all it was my first tattoo. I might as well try and add the second one at the end of the year or so. It was supposed to be life-long haha, but nope ;d though I did go to two different shows of theirs years ago (having the tattoo already) and wouldn't find myself asking for a ticket like that. However, I did show it to them when I went into their bus with Wade for a brief moment in Prague, I got lost with my friends then hahh.
I don't have any tattoos, but I was really tempted to get an aof one when I was younger partially so I could get into their shows for free haha.
Did you get reimbursed at the door when you showed your tattoo? Curious how that worked. Couldn’t let people upload a picture because everyone could just upload the same few pictures lol. Cool idea but wonder how they implemented it. Could see it maybe working in 2022 with individual accounts and shit but back in the day I wonder how it was done.
From what I understood just now searching for the update on the policy it was enough to get it done by e-mail before the show, their old manager used to take care of that for some time, probably getting people guest list spots. Cool thing for a mid-sized band, but now that would be a misunderstanding with 100s AOF tattoos out there, if not more! I googled some yesterday and even saw a real-like portrait of Dallas from one of his myspace era City & Colour promo shoots or something. Wow.
Pretty sure I’ve decided this is their best album. Great template for how a heavy band can age gracefully, which is very hard to do. “Sans Soleil” and “Dark Night of the Soul” immediately stand with classics like “Happiness by the Kilowatt” and “Boiled Frogs”
I can't fathom anyone thinking this is better than Watch Out or Crisis. But hey, different strokes and all that.
Really excited to see them at Bottom Lounge next month, 7 years after having seen them there for the first time. Wasn't sure if it ever was gonna happen again. Very grateful
