Yep those noodly, post-rock influenced instrumental sections really set them apart from a lot of bands of that era, and made that record special.
Highly recommend listening to this album on a decent pair of headphones if you can! There's a lot of awesome stuff subtly mixed in the background :)
Yeah the more I listen to this the more I like it. Starting to really like a bunch of the tracks. The closer is great as well as Blue Spade.
Longtime Alexis fan and I feel like Otherness is the album I was expecting from a group of guys in their late 30s/early 40s. Most comparable to Old Crows/Young Cardinals, but definitely a departure from all of their previous work. I like the crooning that happens on most tracks. Crisis was the first album, to me, where all the vocalists really came together. I'm a little disappointed that Wade's vocals aren't really distinguishable on this album. His vocal coming out party was definitely on Crisis and I enjoyed his vocals on OC/YC too, but he I feel like he's barely on Otherness. Wade said in an interview that he wrote the entire song (guitar riffs and vocals) for "Sans Soleil" and just gave it to Dallas to sing lol. It's great to see these guys still capable of making a cohesive album. No matter how much they've departed from previous work, they know how to put their staple sound on tracks, even if there's less immediacy and urgency - enter: "Blue Spade" as a lovely example of the lead bluesy guitar sound that we've all heard during the band's live shows (think their in-between-songs jammy riffs).
Speaking of Wade, if anyone in here hasn’t listened to the Dooms Children record yet, I highly recommend doing so. Maybe my favorite album last year
They had shows planned last summer but had to cancel them due to COVID restrictions. Curiosity led me to check out Dooms Children, and while it isn't my thing, it's interesting to hear him in a non-heavy context. It goes even further into blues and heartland rock territory than this album.
If you check out Doom’s Children, make sure to listen to Heavy Year. That song has been a staple for me since repeat
I didn't really like that album at first when it came out, but now there's not enough of Wade on the new AOF record and I returned to Dooms Children today - on my second listen in a row and I love it hahah!
Same with George, it's just the way the album sounds that makes all the vocals blend together and sometimes even get buried under the other instruments. I'm still getting used to that to be honest.
Frank Carter and The Rattlesnakes is a really solid project for those who haven’t checked that out yet.
Have you tried the debut album too? That's very much in the scope of Gallows whereas the albums after that are far more rock orientated.
