I’d never heard of Overhead, the Albatross before but gave it a go because I was drawn to the band name. The intro track wrecked me. It’s a speech over beautiful guitars from a father about their child and their hopes for their future. The album has so many ideas - mostly instrumental but with really interesting beats and guitar work. Some spoken word vocals and very few sung vocals. a complete surprise but really really good
I can't believe it's almost one of the final weeks of the year for new music. I'm fairly equally excited for all the albums listed below, so no favorite highlights for me this week! Poppy -- her mix of electro-pop and metal is hit or miss for me, but this album is all hit! Linkin Park -- Meteora was one of the first albums I bought with my own money. I unapologetically love Linkin Park. This album is fine -- not bad and not great. Emily Armstrong seems like a pretty not great person though! Thy Catafalque -- album is awesome and all over the place, it contains metal in folk, symphonic, groove, doom, and gothic shades. JIN -- Jin of BTS crafts a really fun, bouncy pop-rock-lite album. Tiny Moving Parts -- Good emo music Veilburner -- Interesting, kind of wacky, off-kilter death metal? In Her Own Words -- I have absolutely loved every single album this post-hardcore-y pop-punk band has released. This one is weird and has not grabbed me, and even turned me off in some spots. They tried to incorporate a happier tone and more genres (more of a pop edge, some misplaced electronics, whoa oh'd gang vocals, and there's even a rap-lite verse). This did not work for me. Maybe it'll click later... As I Lay Dying -- I haven't listened to this, and I don't know if I will. Band is so fucked up. Edit: I ended up listening to AILD, and damnit, it's good.
That's for fucking sure. But the original-ish dudes did drop their Wovenwar band (which was better than AILD!!!) to rejoin Tim Lambesis, and then most left after their last album, and then the new dudes came in, and then all those dudes freaking left, along with some management team members. So, I include band because of that. The whole thing is fucked for so many reasons. What an album title though... "Through Storms Ahead." Bahahahaha
I'm pretty sure 3 of the original members left, leaving only the lead singer and guitarist. Not sure if that has something to do with their slight change in sound, but I 100% agree with your thoughts. The lead singer (Joey Fleming) released some solo stuff that leaned quite a bit poppier, so I kind of figured this IHOW release might also lean that way (especially after seeing a good chunk of the band leaving - or whatever happened).
Ah. I had no clue. Well, that’ll definitely change a band’s sound! I’ll have to check out Joey Fleming’s solo stuff, I think his voice would fit with pop music, so that sounds cool.
Ex-BMTH keyboardist Jordan Fish produced and helped write. I think Poppy has always been talented and interesting, but it seems that he really brought out something extra from her. This album is so awesome.
This post had me hyped to check out Michael Kiwanuka - Small Changes but it doesn’t come out until next week.
