Earshot especially is a band near and dear to my heart that I wish took off instead of petering out. Technically they're still around, but they're not exactly releasing material on a regular basis either.
Probably my favorite one-album band, I think. Such a shame they fizzled out after just one album. Them and Pulse Ultra.
Dry Cell. Man, maybe the most unfortunate of the three, as their debut album didn't even see an official release until years after the band had already broken up. They weren't great, as they were very much Linkin Park rip-offs with fairly trite and uninspired lyrics, but I still found a couple of songs of theirs I liked. Really funny that the lead singer went on to be the current frontman of Stone Temple Pilots, where he's actually surprisingly much better both lyrically and vocally. On a different note, another band I enjoyed around that era that also never had their album see official release is a hard rock band called Rumblefish, who had an album called Exit Highland that was supposed to release on Roadrunner. Never did. Only place to find it is on file-sharing networks. Shame, it was pretty straightforward rock but they had some real catchy numbers IMO.
I remember weird rumblings for a while after they broke up that the lead singer was apparently embarrassed by the band? Not sure how true that is though. At the very least, his tune must've mellowed in recent years as he's reminisced about their work from time to time on social media. I actually also remember an incident where this one band tried to enter a battle of the bands competition using Mad At Gravity's cover of Come Undone as their entry, and the vocalist was the one to call them out on it. Pretty hilarious.
Earshot is doing a 20th anniversary show for Letting Go in December. Already got my ticket and pretty excited that Boy Hits Car is playing too
I'm super jealous right now. Boy Hits Car is another band I fucking can't get enough of. At least they put out a new album every four or five years, like a beautiful rock music unicorn.
So I think the reason I got to see all those bands together is because Reign of Fire was released that year (2002) along with another pretty big film that had high hopes but ended up bombing. Any guesses?
I finally got to see them live a few months ago, at the same venue they are playing next month, and I was so pleasantly surprised. I’ve been listening to them since I was 13 (now 36) and wasn’t sure how they were live. Amazing live show
So many awesome band names flying around in that exchange. Pulse Ultra and Mad at Gravity are classics.
This discussion brought back a two-day free festival that I attended in 2003. It wasn't easy, but I managed to find the lineup: Echo 7 Memento Ra Hed PE Unloco Verbena Shinedown Theory of a Deadman Powerman 5000 There was a halfpipe in the middle of the crowd and the Sprite Remix was flowing freely
