That one crushed me as well. So hard to watch. Paul Mescal's expression in that cut back to him finishing off another pint was brilliant. There's a hint of regret in there while also clearly being too stubborn and embarrassed to go up.
I think I was enjoying the naturalistic performances so much but missing the general point. Then right as he opened the door in the last shot and the rave lights were going and it faded to black I just said, "Oh." Then I cried. Incredible movie.
So I was never able to see this before, but tonight my wife went out with some friends and my kids are at my in-law’s for the night so I decided to sit down alone and watch it. That might have been a mistake. I just finished about twenty minutes ago and I’m sitting here in stunned silence after sobbing throughout the credits. I wasn’t prepared for the last shot and yes, reading back through the comments in here, I too was a wreck from the Under Pressure scene through to the end. One question I have, was that scene with him sobbing in the hotel room meant to be taking place after Sophie leaves or the night after she got everyone to sing to him?
Also, one of the scenes that struck me early on was when Sophie is lying on the hotel bed and asks her dad if he knows what this strange feeling is where she feels down and heavy for some unknown reason, like she can’t lift herself up out of it. She’s just barely visible on camera while Calum is staring in the mirror listening to her describe his very existence as the realization that he’s passed this on to his daughter is washing over him and he spits in the mirror where it lingers long after he’s gone.
