Probably overhyping it a bit, but honestly one of my favorite movies I've ever seen. And I say this as someone who usually has issues with stories about AI and robots being treated like real people
The film explores the relationships between cultural identity, family, and memory in really interesting ways. There are a few flashback type scenes in particular which depict the subtleties of memory in a really elegant way. It also is the rare film which is centered around robots/AI in the future that, while it does feature some dystopian elements, doesn't feel overly dour. The cinematography is absolutely stunning cinematography. Ignoring all that, there is a dance sequence in the opening credits which is worth the price of admission alone.
lol, fair. In everyone's defense, sometimes it's difficult to fully articulate how you feel about a movie right after you see it so it's easier to just post "i loved this".
Yeah, and for me a big part of it was that literally working in robotics and this being one of the least frustrating (for me) depictions of AI/robots ever. The warranty and "he was refurbished from a robot part of a defense program and they never took his experimental memory chip out" expositions we're incredible. And Colin Farrell essentially being racist against clones
This little details that were sprinkled throughout without heavy handed exposition elevated this to another level. Some of the best world building I've seen since Fury Road. Just drop us in and let us learn about it for ourselves.
I checked out Kogonada's first film, Columbus today. It reminded me of Lost In Translation with a coming of age angle. Loved it. It's streaming on Kanopy if anyone else is looking for it.
This was a treat. It didn’t need a ton of exposition. It didn’t need a huge complicated world for our characters to live in. Just rich in themes, atmosphere, and some really understated, but stellar, performances. Really top notch and I loved how it played with my heart and my anxieties about technological progress simultaneously!
When I first saw Columbus I rewound it several times to rewatch the part where Cho makes Richardson explain why she really loves a particular building. Incredible moment. I also live about 80 minutes from Columbus so I’ve gotten to walk around it, cool town.
