Afrobeat/Afropop Thread

i have been getting more and more into these sounds, particularly as they have been increasingly lifted by US rappers

some of my faves include:

DaVido

Wizkid (of drake "one dance" fame)

Ayo Jay

Kiss Daniel

 

I've basically only heard all the crossover tracks with hip hop artists and a few big singles, but everything I've heard I really like.

 

knew youd be the first one in here and the popcaan thread

 

new wizkid track getting a push in the US is kind of a mistake. three singers? too diluted.

 

I'm still eternally an album guy, not a singles guy. Any staple records to educate myself?

Idk if it belongs here bc it's more reggae/dancehall but this is a good find from The Fader 115 tracks of 2016

 

several great afropop records came out this year by kiss daniel, yemi alade, tiwa savage. still a singles genre tho

What are your thoughts?

 

It's alright but pretty same-y throughout. Best tracks are Come Closer and the two Ty Dolla Sign tracks and that's mostly because Wizkid has someone to bounce off.

 

That's kind of a bummer. I love "Come Closer" not thrilled about a Chris Brown collab though
