White Offerings is the closest they've sounded to StS since, so I have a soft spot for it as well. Wish the entire album was as good as that one.
Burials was the perfect album to get me back into them after Crash Love didnt do much for me. Adore Burials. Blood album was just slightly a step down from Burials for me. Which means its still awesome.
They should not have two albums released that are short one world titles that start with B. I'm always getting Burials and Bodies confused in this thread.
obligatory ranking post: 1. Decemberunderground 2. Sing the sorrow 3. Art of Drowning 4. Burials 5. Crash love 6. Blood album 7. Black sails 8. Bodies - I never got into anything before black sails so no opinion on the rest
People who haven't checked out pre-Black Sails AFI oughta give Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes a spin, imo it holds up pretty well and there's some pretty great standout tracks.
Since hearing the new song, I've wondered if there was some studio trickery to get his voice that low. Because in Stiff Kittens, and a number of other songs, he doesn't hit that low a register. And his "low" register often sounds more like a put-on affectation. Or maybe he was huffing a can of compressed air before singing.
The problem is that STS and Decemberunderground are such good records, so unique and specific and truly genre-defining, that ranking the albums after just feel like comparing a different band. Those two are almost 100/100 albums and the four most recent are like 50s at their best and 20s at their worst. Sure you can debate which if the four were a little better than the others but personally I just kinda feel like peak AFI ended as a band and everything after is a shell of that band
Most people and their fans just ... don't agree with you lol? If you don't like the band anymore, that's cool? But we do.
The Blood Album has plenty of great songs but as a whole it isn't as consistent and doesn't flow as well as Burials, I can see why people forget about it at times.
Yep, the wind that carries me away is honestly one of my favorite AFI songs. They're so good at Depeche Mode type shit
I pretty much agree with Steve. Burials and Blood Album are good, but don’t reach the highs of that peak.
easy top three: Sing the Sorrow Decemberunderground The Art of Drowning the rest I’d have to think about for a minute
I’m curious what the rest of this album will sound like. Not 100% into this song, but it could be an album I just drive and vibe with.
I have been loving the journey AFI has been taking us on. Gothic punk into post punk with a Depeche Mode lean makes total sense. The cool thing about the band is that they never sit in one lane for too long. Always on board for a new album!
