I dig the regular cover a lot but definitely wanna snag this version (which is sadly not available at my local Barnes & Noble)
Need to spend more time with this but I dig the 80s style. Both interviews were insane though. Mad that the label wanted AFI to do a feat with 50 Cent in the DU era haha. Seems Crash Love being a commercial failure hit the band hard, especially Davey, who sounded like he lost faith in the industry and music for a while.
Crash Love has a lot of interesting starts but most of the songs do not stick the landing. Even one of the better-sounding songs on there like “End Transmission” never really crests. It’s just a rolling wave.
Blasphemy & Excess is really starting to stand out to me. Song rocks. NO FUCKING REGRETS. Album’s awesome, I like it more each time I throw it on.
Crash Love needing to happen for me to get Burials was a'ok for me. (Not in the sense that Davey went through some dark times, of course not). Finished the interview. Adored all of that. Wish they spoke more about Blood album. And, finished listening to the record in 3 sittings. This music is not for me. As in, if this wasn't AFI doing it, I would never listen by choice. But, I do like it. I want more time with it. May end up loving it.
I like it, don't love it yet. I'm kind of in a rut with staying in my comfort zone musically & this is something I probably wouldn't have checked out if it wasn't AFI. I love The Bird of Prey, though. I was so excited hear that song because it was sick live when they debuted it. I've also been listening to The Blood Album the past week after they played Snow Cats the other day & I like it a lot more than I remember. Lots of strong songs on it. So Beneath You is the worst song they've put out since Mini Trucks Suck, though.
Been getting the time to spend time with this album the last few days finally and like everyone else said, they really do completely nail the sound they're going for here. They've been flirting with this sound for the last few albums but to hear them fully dive in is so cool, Davey's vocals are as good as ever. I don't think I would ever put this in like my top 5 albums by them but that's because they have such a strong discography My biggest issue with this album is honestly that I want more once it ends, I wish it was a song or two longer. Not the worst problem an album can have though lol
Sad to say the second half did not hit for me nearly as hard as the first, but I will give it a few more spins.
Used to be deep into the goth music/community back in my 20s…. I gotta say honestly I’d dig this even if it wasn’t AFI. It doesn’t sound like pretending. It sounds like this is them and Dave’s voice just fits this genre so well. The Bird Of Prey is my favorite so far.
I’ve never really been a big AFI fan but decided to check this out based on the praise I’ve seen. Very pleasantly surprised by this, definitely going to get a lot of play from me as it cools down.
I'm in a similar spot where I listen to far more of the music that inspired them than from their early aughts contemporaries. I would also be all over this if it weren't them. I do wish it were longer, but also I genuinely love all 10 tracks.
On the same boat…all 10 tracks are strong and work well even on their own. funny enough back then when I’d go to Xmortis (Goth event) in Cambridge,MA they would occasionally throw Blaqk Audio in playlist. I’m way too old for that now but I’m pretty sure this album get some spin over there in next couple of months
My Spotify started playing Bodies after this and now I’m digging that one too, damn I’ve been sleeping on these guys for a bit
Very excited to see them tomorrow, love how much they’re changing up the set night to night. There looks to be a general theme in the tracks they’re selecting. Very dark and fall appropriate.
Listened to this album while test driving my car tonight. Windows half down, sun going down, 70 degrees outside....What an experience. Spear of Truth -> Marguerite is an incredible stretch of songs!
My hot takes, after a lot of anticipation and a few listens: -Voidward is my favorite. -NOONEUNDERGROUND feels like a b-side, and not one of their good b-sides. -Bird of Prey, Blasphemy, Spear of Truth don't really do much for me. -Enjoying 6 out of 10 songs...not bad, but a bit disappointing. -I'm happy that this album cycle has generated so much fresh interest for a band 30 years into their career. -I'm happy Miss Murder is off their setlists and that you never know what song you're gonna get at your tour stop. That is all.
Haven't done this since I was an infant but I want to decorate my place to full blown Halloween / Fall stuff just to get the most complete experience when I listen to this Sorry Davey, but you can't say you're not a Halloween band then put this out at that time of the year lol
