Loved the interview. Could listen to Davey talk for hours to be fair haha. Such an interesting bloke.
Decided to sign back up today for the first time since the AP.net days cause ive enjoyed reading the discourse, and I just need to talk AFI for a minute. Got into the band thanks to an older neighbor giving me black sails, I became obsessed with art of drowning - playing along to those records was so important to my guitar playing. I've seen afi 3+ times on every tour since 2003, even flew to California for the sing the sorrow show and the Missing man release show (their best setlist ever), and I've grown to know the guys on a level where DXH calls me jersey Steve. The last album I LOVED was Burials, it's a dark masterpiece, exploratory and bleak.Blood has some cool moments, Bodies has a small handful of tracks, and I had no idea what to expect with this new stuff. What I expected least was them to finally go full deathrock/goth/post punk, after years of flirting with it and wearing the t shirts that got me into music like joy division and Bauhaus as a 13 year old. These new songs are wildly exciting, it feels like a band playing the music they love that made them want to be a band in the first place in a way. Pulling from so many references and making it all their own, it's gotten me wildly excited for the shows im seeing on the upcoming tour. Put on some eyeliner and batcave dance your hearts out. Let's goooo. Also the Hardlore interview is basically what I've always wanted to hear from any of the guys, the real shit. The only other lost "grail" I know of is the dvd shot in 00-01 that dreamworks killed when they signed their deal. AFI forever
I’m enjoying so much the first part. I’m not a hardcore AFI fan so everything they talk about feels new to me. Edit: LOL your avatar!
i'm about 3/4 of the way through already since it went up on Patreon today. Fascinating. Both of these episodes have filled in so much backstory of info I've had a version of for years and years. This is so great, honestly the best interview with any member of this band ever. I've never heard such blunt, blatant honesty.
Part 2 of the interview is so good. Davey is so well spoken, it's just fun to listen to him talk. Been going on a deep dive of their discography too, half due to Hardlore and half due to the new album being out next week, and man I never gave Crash Love enough love. Pretty incredible record.
I genuinely love Crash Love (lol). Not to mention some of my favorite b-sides are from that. We've Got the Knife fucking goes.
Oh man. That was one of the big reasons I was so excited for the release. We were finally getting 100 Words for the first time in years.
Technically the b-sides weren’t from the Crash Love sessions though. They were mainly from STS and DU. All better than anything on CL though imo!
I just re-listened to CL today and it’s way better than I remember. Probably my second favorite of the post DU albums behind Blood album
Obviously the Fainting Spells screams are awesome. But only recently did I have some good noise cancelling headphones while listening. The way Davey shrieks the "out" syllable of "I'm the devout" and "get the blood out" is maniacal.
And going off only Crash Love sessions, my favorite b-side is definitely Where We Used To Play. Even including STS and DU session songs, it's only behind Fainting Spells for me.
The b-sides were initially my favorite part, so unlike anything else they'd done. Just remember there are a bunch, not just the 4 on the bonus CD: Ether and Carcinogen Crush (which was available thanks to guitar hero 3, sing the sorrow session) were japanese bonus tracks. Then too late for gods and breathing towers to heaven were iTunes bonus tracks and demos for crash love sessions. And yeah, 100 words was STS session and Fainting Spells was DU. I've been on a crash love kick lately too, I always forget how much it rips. Veronica Sawyer Smokes? Yes plz. Okay, I feel better now, even medicate. And It Was Mine is a totally underrated closer. Love it. Just the greatest band
Ether was also on NASCAR 09. Which after this interview, I can only assume that Davey fucking hated lol.
This game came out when I was working at GameStop and I was so desperate to hear it that I put the game into the demo console kiosk and recorded it with my garbage phone
