Landlord texted me that some weird postcard came in the mail for me while I was away. Guess it's this.
I guess zero songs stand out to me, I've listened to the album many times and I recognize none of the songs, they all see like paint-by-numbers AFI to me, or what an AFI tribute band would write, really unremarkable and plain in my opinion
I don't really like California either, so I can agree with you there. i also did not like Crash Love, haha. I couldn't tell you if a song came from Crash Love or Burials if there was a gun to my head. I will forever live and die by Sing The Sorrow, and Decemberunderground is cool too
I can't imagine putting Decemberunderground over Burials or Crash Love tbh, in terms of whole albums. Decemberunderground feels like such a mess of a whole album compared to their others, and that feeling grew on me with every listen of it when I didn't think of it when first listening to it.
There are just zero songs on Crash or Burials that I like more than any songs on December. Even further, there are zero songs I remember by name from either of those two albums
I honestly like more songs bonus tracks off Crash Love than I do Burials. I enjoyed "I Hope You Suffer", but honestly that's it.
Ah! All three albums have fantastic songs. DU - Kill Caustic, Summer Shudder, The Interview, Kiss and Control and Endlessly She Said CL - Torch Song, End Transmission, I Am Trying Very Hard to Be Here, Veronica Sawyer Smokes and It Was Mine Burials - A Deep Slow Panic, 17 Crimes, The Conductor, Greater Than 84 I wouldn't be able to say I'd completely put one over the other. If anything, make an AFI mix and love it all
The Crash Love b-sides are some of their strongest songs ever; We've Got the Knife, Too Late For Gods, Breathing Towers to Heaven are all stellar. Taking out some of the weaker songs from the actual album and replacing them with these would have made Crash Love an incredible effort.
Pretty excited to see what they come up with next. IMO Burials was one of the best albums they've put out. If I had to rank them: Best) Black Sails In The Sunset = The Art of Drowning: The band experimented on both of these albums and actually progressed from their early work. The earlier albums might as well be a different band. Both albums have catchy songs, and during this era they were amazing live. Good albums) Sing The Sorrow = Burials: STS was another shift for the band, but this time it wasn't good. Davey lost his voice I guess during this time (didn't he get vocal surgery?). I don't mind change, but they really played it safe on this album. I know the Art of Drowning started that with songs like "Days of Phoenix", but this album took it to the extreme for me. Such a boring, overproduced record. Burials was a return to form for me, and at least it was catchy. When I first heard "I Hope You Suffer" I got pretty excited. They seemed to have that oomph back. Mediocre/Bad) Crash Love: Boring, Forgettable, and a big WTF for most people. I understand them wanting to make a solid Rock album, but this was just so stale. It had no character, and very few interesting songs. I get what they were trying to do, but they just didn't do a good job. Still better than the abomination that is Decemberunderground however.... Awful) DECEMBERUNDERGROUND: Their worst album by far. It took me multiple attempts to even get through it. I had to stop every other song, and just reflect on what I heard. I can't think of a single thing it has going for it.
Sing the Sorrow > The Art of Drowning > Black Sails in the Sunset > Decemberunderground > Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes > Crash Love > Burials Haven't listened to nearly enough Very Proud of Ya and Answer That and Stay Fashionable to add it to the list.
Sing the Sorrow Black Sails in the Sunset The Art of Drowning Decemberunderground Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes Burials Crash Love Answer That and Stay Fashionable Very Proud of Ya (even the band hated this thing immediately when it came out because of the awful production)
I usually pretend Answer That and VPOY don't exist, outside a few songs. I don't mind Shut Your Mouth but I only really ever listen to Black Sails and forward now. That being said, I have never seen someone claim Sing The Sorrow was anything other than a masterpiece until I read this thread, so you know, that's a new experience :D
STS > Decemberunderground > CL bonus tracks >>> CL >>> Burials. Haven't listened to the other albums enough to rank them.
I've enjoyed "Crash Love" for ages now, I did find it a little jarring when it first came out though. Love DU, Burials and STS.
I kind of wish they'd just make an announcement like "hey, we have a new single/album coming out on October 28th" but these weird shenanigans are part of why I love this band, haha.
