Burials is the only real highlight of their post DU albums for me, genuinely wondering if that's a popular take or not (I haven't listened to it in 11 years)
id honestly go as far as to say burials is their most consistent post sing the sorrow. decemberunderground and crash love are very much bags of highlights but i dont play em front to back much the crash love bonuses though good god ether is so sick
Agreed, I think the top 21st century albums go: Sing The Sorrow decemberunderground Burials And I would consider Burials a very close third because there are some incredibly strong songs there (17 Crimes, Hope You Suffer, The Conductor, Deep Slow Panic, Rewind, Heart Stops, Wild, Greater Than 84). They had no business making an album that good that late into their career. I think if you stripped decemberunderground of "Miss Murder," "Love Like Winter" and "Summer Shudder," and you trimmed three songs off of Burials, it would get the edge. But those DU songs are certified classics, so I can't bring myself to think it. Either way, AFI continue to be one of the strongest bands we've got in 2025. I definitely dug at least half of Blood and pretty much all of Missing Man. Bodies didn't do it for me, but, it was their eleventh album, so not everything is gonna hit. I have no doubt they still have some great songs left for us.
I've always thought that Crash Love is fairly underrated, but maybe it's because I think AFI did a pretty damn good job making a straightforward rock album. Anyway, just read this article and is good: Memory Lapsed – AFI “Crash Love”
Burials has some real gems. But you just can't beat I hope you suffer, the bridge is amazing. They kill it live. Best song they have ever written
Holy shit I wrote that article haha I forgot this was even out there! Thanks so much for sharing! Need to fix those links that have since become broken since 2018 lol
Count me in the “burials is very good” camp (probably my no.3 STS-onward record) but in retrospect I’m less surprised it didn’t catch on as much as it should’ve. Heart Stops is probably one of my least favorite AFI songs these days and with how good panic/17/rewind/84/wild are I don’t really wanna sit through the slower, groovier songs, some of which have some goofy sounding moments to me.
Burials is great, definitely their last front to back consistent album so far. Of course there's only been 2 album since then but still!
