Still to this day, there isn’t another band like AFI.

Good call out, their early stuff was always similar.

having a very afi heavy weekend and god what a special band these guys are. the whole run from black sails through sing the sorrow has aged impeccably. burials is also so goddamn good, never really gave that album the attention it deserves but its songwriting is phenomenal

I was just listening to December and Sorrow earlier today for the first time in a while and they’re incredible records (especially the latter) that still hold up exceptionally well.

I wish I enjoyed the records that came after ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I hated crash love for more than a decade before it clicked, don't give up hope.

Crash Love has some really solid songs but the two previous records just can't compete.

I really like crash love and burials. Blood album has decent songs but sounds like shit. Missing man ep is decent. Bodies doesn’t do much for me

Having Jade as the only producer for them has been a bad move in my opinion

Yeah blood album and bodies don't tickle my pickle at all. Some songs on blood album have such strong potential though, which kind of makes it even more of a bummer for me.

Burials is the last album of theirs that did anything for me, but it's a banger.

you can make a solid album out of blood, bodies, and missing man but yeah the jade produced era has mostly been a miss for me unfort. their sound feels v noncommittal and blurry rn and i get tired of it on the new albums very quickly

speaks to how little memorable ideas both have going for them unfortunately

Each record since DU has been inconsistent but they all have plenty of bangers. I think part of the issue is that I think the pre-bodies songs would resonate even more if that sound was as big as it was in 2006. It’s easier to get wrapped in things when it’s fresh and culturally resonant.
All that said, I think DU is there actual magnum opus. ‘Twas ahead of its time. Just an incredibly elegant album.

Was Decemberunderground ahead of its time or is it one of the most 2006 albums ever

i put this on a playlist to be played at this place i volunteer at

everyone really enjoyed it, radio friendly AFI. and yah i agree DU is a masterpiece, just took the band to that next level and they forever stayed there.

STS and DU just both felt like a band completely becoming a fully realized version of themselves, a specifically unique and singular sound that only they could do, and no one has replicated since then. And then... They kinda lost that. They've undoubtedly still made good songs but the special spark was lost

i love parts of du, particularly affliction and 37mm, but a lot of my favorite songs from those sessions were shelved and its more radio leaning cuts dont grab me the same way they used to

basically what im saying is the view from here is transcendent

Yes, and yes, haha. I still have to listen to Decemberunderground every winter, otherwise it just isn't winter.

Wrecked 'em? Damn near killed 'em!

Both albums (especially Sorrow) also happen to be some of the best sounding albums I’ve ever heard. The production immaculate.

yeah I think all of the albums after decemberunderground are a little uneven but all still have some amazing songs on them, but the run of Art of Drowning-Decemberunderground to this day is astoundingly good

The role of Jerry Finn on these two albums cannot be overstated. Everything post-DU has its moments (especially Burials), but they've never quite recaptured that magic.
